In Loving Memory

Nerlin Setalsingh
January 13, 1946 — July 10, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Nerlin Setalsingh, affectionately known as “Nerl”, who departed this world on July 10, 2026, at the age of 80, after bravely enduring illness. Born on January 13, 1946, in Saint Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica, Nerlin was the cherished daughter of Doris Virginia and Cephas Augustas Williams. She is now reunited in peace with her parents, as well as her predeceased brothers, Bertie and Ludford, fondly known as "Luddy" and her beloved son-in-law, Arthur Dexter Horsey.
Nerlin's journey began in Jamaica, where she spent her formative years before moving to Maryland in 1976, a place she called home for the last five decades. Her life was a beautiful tapestry of love, family, and community. In September 1975, she married her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Edward Setalsingh, a union that spanned over sixty years and was blessed with two wonderful daughters, Mitzie Nerline and Christine Khamala Horsey. Together, Nerlin and Daniel built a life rich with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Nerlin was a woman of many talents and interests. Her love for fishing, reading, game shows and her enjoyment of comedy brought endless joy to her life and to those around her. Known for her witty sense of humor, she often lightened the mood with her favorite saying, "I'm hanging in there... just hope I don't hang mi self", followed by her signature encouragement, "You hang in there, OK."
Nerl’s culinary skills were legendary; she was an extraordinary chef whose Jamaican fusion dishes were beloved by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. The dahl and roti, stew peas, hamchoy and pork, ground food and saltfish, and her coveted specialty CURRY CRAB were just a few of the delectable creations that left everyone eagerly anticipating their next meal at her table.
Her quiet, loving nature and her dedication to family left an indelible mark on all who knew her. A warm and loving grandmother, Nerlin cherished every moment spent with them, Trevan(Lyneshea) and Nadiya; bonus granddaughters Samantha(Will) and Milese, as well as her great granddaughter, Summer. She also leaves behind two nephews, a niece, several grandnieces and nephews, devoted cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
A private memorial will be held to honor Nerlin's life and legacy. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shown sympathy or performed acts of kindness during this time of bereavement.
