It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Nerlin Setalsingh, who departed this world on July 10, 2026, at the age of 80, after bravely enduring illness. Born on January 13, 1946, in Saint Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica, Nerlin was the cherished daughter of Doris Virginia and Cephas Augustas Williams. She is now reunited in peace with her parents, as well as her predeceased brothers, Bertie and Ludford, fondly known as "Luddy."
Nerlin's journey began in Jamaica, where she spent her formative years before moving to Maryland in 1976, a place she called home for the last five decades. Her life was a beautiful tapestry of love, family, and community. In September 1975, she married her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Edward Setalsingh, a union that spanned over sixty years and was blessed with two wonderful daughters, Mitzie Nerline and Christine Khamala Horsey. Together, Nerlin and Daniel built a life rich with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
A warm and loving grandmother, Nerlin adored her three grandchildren, Trevan Horsey and his wife Lyneesha, Nadiya Horsey, and Milese Massey, as well as her great-granddaughter, Summer Horsey. She also leaves behind two nephews, a niece, several grandnieces and nephews, devoted cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever treasure her memory.
Nerlin was a woman of many talents and interests. She worked alongside her husband in their family business while raising their daughters. Her love for fishing, frequent visits back to Jamaica, reading periodicals, and her enjoyment of comedy brought endless joy to her life and to those around her. Known for her witty sense of humor, she often lightened the mood with her favorite saying, "I'm hanging in there... Just hope I don't hang myself," followed by her signature encouragement, "You hang in there, OK."
Nerlin's culinary skills were legendary; she was an extraordinary chef whose Jamaican-Indian fusion dishes were beloved by all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Her DAHL and ROTI, ground food and saltfish, and CURRY CRAB with steamed white rice were just a few of the delectable creations that left everyone eagerly anticipating their next meal at her table.
Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and she cherished every moment spent with them, her face always lighting up with joy at their presence. Her quiet, loving nature and her dedication to family left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Nerlin's life and legacy. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shown sympathy or performed acts of kindness during this time of bereavement.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice in Nerlin's memory. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy of love, laughter, and culinary excellence will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, dear Nerlin; you will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Funeral Program
I’m Free
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free,
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, to play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that peace at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee,
God wanted me now; He set me free.
