Nelson Nathaniel Henry Jr.

Nelson Henry, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on August 14, 2026. Born on May 8, 1936, in Thunderbolt-Savannah, Georgia, Nelson was a man of quiet strength and unwavering love, whose warm smile and kind demeanor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Nelson was born to Nelson Sr. and Hettie Henry, and from an early age, he exemplified the values of dedication and integrity. He graduated high school in 1954, where he excelled in various sports and discovered a lifelong passion for golf. In 1957, Nelson married the love of his life, Clara Pearl Soles, in Mississippi. Together, they built a beautiful life over 69 years of marriage, filled with love, joy, and laughter. They were blessed with three children: James Howard (Arely), Kimberly Marie, and the late Sonya O. Mitchell (Juan A. ll), who brought immense pride and happiness into their lives. Nelson also embraced his role as a grandfather to Jason Garrett (Vicky), Kimi Marie, Jamal Anthony, and the late Juan A. Mitchell, and later, as a great-grandfather to Devin James, Dallas Montrell, Emilio Alexander, and Elijah Mitchell. Nelson served his country honorably in the United States Navy, where his service took him to various corners of the world, enriching his family's life with diverse cultural experiences. After retiring from the Navy, he continued to work on the base in Coronado, California, contributing his skills and dedication to the community he loved. A man of varied interests, Nelson was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending peaceful days fishing. His commitment to helping others was evident through his sponsorship of St. Jude’s and his support for Native American youth on reservations, reflecting his deeply compassionate nature. Nelson's family fondly remembers his gentle sense of humor and his unwavering support. Clara recalls her dear Henry always responding to her requests with a loving "Yes Sweet, whatever you want." His children and grandchildren cherish the moments of love and guidance he provided, from his son James’s admiration, "You are an awesome Dad," to Kimberly’s cherished “Hi DaDa” and his usual warm reply, “Oh Kim.” Nelson is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Sonya O. Mitchell, and grandson, Juan A. Mitchell. He is survived by his devoted wife, Clara Pearl, and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and kindness. A funeral service to honor Nelson's remarkable life will be held at 11:15 AM on September 9, 2026, at the Miramar National Cemetery, located at 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Nelson's memory to St. Jude’s or organizations supporting Native American youth on reservations. Nelson Henry will be forever remembered for his gentle spirit, his dedication to family, and his unwavering love. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
