Nelson Timrod Smith

July 5, 1952 — June 2, 2026

With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Nelson Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Nelson departed this life on June 2, 2026, at the age of 73, at home, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with dementia. Born on July 5, 1952, in Oakland, California, Nelson was the cherished son of Otis and Ruth Smith. His journey through life was deeply rooted in the values and love imparted by his parents and Grandma Pinky, all of whom have predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his dear daughter Otisha Smith, whose memory he held close to his heart. Nelson's life was marked by profound love and devotion to his family, beginning with his beloved wife, Yvette Smith. Their union, which began on December 18, 2018, was a testament to enduring love and companionship. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, including their children Alfonso, Jemilla, Crystal, Tykia, and Marshelle, who will forever carry forward his legacy of love and commitment. A proud graduate of Castlemont High School, Nelson went on to dedicate over 50 years of service as a skilled butcher at Safeway. His dedication to his work was matched only by his passion for life outside of it. Nelson found immense joy in the simple pleasures of gardening, a hobby he shared with his wife and daughter Marshelle. Together, they transformed their yard into a vibrant oasis of flowers, trees, and fruits—a living testament to his nurturing spirit. Nelson, affectionately known as "Papa," was a man of quiet strength and unwavering dedication. His presence at every dance recital, soccer game, and baseball match was a testament to his steadfast support for his children and grandchildren. His six grandchildren were fortunate to experience the warmth of his love and the delight of his attentive presence at their events, right up until his final days. A man of few words, Nelson expressed his love through actions, ensuring those around him felt cared for, loved, and seen. He delighted in hosting family gatherings, especially during the holidays and summer barbecues, where his joy was palpable as he worked alongside his family, creating cherished memories that will endure in their hearts. Nelson is survived by his devoted wife Yvette, his children Alfonso, Jemilla, Crystal, Tykia, and Marshelle, his brother Phil, and his six adoring grandchildren. While his physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. As we bid farewell to Nelson, we celebrate a life well-lived, honoring his gentle strength, unwavering love, and the countless ways he enriched the lives of those around him. May he rest in peace, embraced by the love of those who have gone before, and may his memory forever be a blessing to all who knew him.
