In Loving Memory

Neil J. Harkins
August 29, 1939 — May 13, 2026
It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude that we announce the passing of Neil J. Harkins, who departed this world peacefully on May 13, 2026, at the age of 87, after a swift illness. Born on August 29, 1939, in Philadelphia, PA, Neil's life was a tapestry of love, laughter, and dedication, woven together by the threads of family, service, and community.
Neil was the beloved son of the late Neil and Rita Harkins, and he now joins his predeceased family members, including his father, Neil Harkins Sr., his mother, Rita Harkins (née McConeghy), his sister, Rita Glancey (née Harkins), and his sister, Helen Scanlon (née Harkins), in eternal rest. He is survived by his cherished sister, Ave, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who were touched by his warmth and kindness. As well as his dear Paulette.
A proud alumnus of North Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Neil's journey of service began when he answered the call to serve his country as a Seabee in the United States Navy. During his four years of honorable service, he was stationed in Okinawa, where, as an High Lineman, he and his unit played a crucial role in electrifying the surrounding areas. Neil's commitment to duty and his engineering prowess left a lasting impact on those he served.
Neil's professional life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his craft as a High Tension lineman. For over 70 years, he was a proud and active member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) union. His colleagues will remember him as a diligent and steadfast worker, always willing to share a joke to lighten the mood or offer a helping hand when needed.
After his military service, Neil developed a deep passion for real estate. He attended Real Estate school, and his investments in homes and apartments became a source of immense pride. His keen eye for potential and his commitment to creating welcoming spaces for others were hallmarks of his character.
Neil's personal life was one filled with humor and joy. Known for his quick wit and infectious laugh, he was never far from a playful jest or a hearty chuckle. Though some may have seen him as a bit of a goofball, those who knew him best understood that his heart was as big as his personality. Neil found immense joy in the company of children, treating them with a special kind of affection and playfulness, as he was very much a big kid at heart.
In honor of Neil's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to celebrate his life and legacy. The Harkins family extends their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Hoag Hospital in Costa Mesa for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Neil during his final days.
We are deeply thankful and blessed to have shared 87 wonderful years with Neil. His spirit will forever remain in our hearts, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all. As we bid farewell, we hold close the memories of a loving brother, uncle, and friend who lived a life rich in laughter and love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Neil's memory to a charitable organization of your choice, reflecting the generous spirit he carried throughout his life.
