It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nathaniel Mayo, fondly known as "Nay Nay," who left us unexpectedly on May 3, 2026, due to a heart attack. Born on a warm summer day in 1969 in the vibrant city of Baltimore, Maryland, Nathaniel spent his entire life embodying the spirit of his beloved hometown.
Nathaniel was the cherished son of Loretta Mayo-Johnson and the late Nathaniel McKinley Mayo. He was blessed with a large and loving family, which included his stepfather, Ellsworth Johnson, his sister Natalie Mayo, and his three brothers, Brian Green, William Green, and Gregory Murray. His family extended further to include his sisters-in-law Taryn Murray, Deborah Green, and Lashawn Walker-Mayo, and a host of nieces and nephews, each of whom he held dear: Tynisha Murray, Donna Murray, Breonna Green, Takia Green, Gregory Murray Jr., Donya Bennett, Daronte Bennett, Tyreek Benson, and Quran Benson. Nathaniel's family also remembers those he joins in eternal rest, including his beloved niece Teasia Benson, his nephew Brian Keith Green, and his great-nephew Shawn Moody Jr.
Although Nathaniel never married, he devoted his heart to his family, creating bonds that transcended the bounds of kinship. He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life—whether playing basketball, listening to music, or indulging in his favorite TV shows like "Sanford and Son" and "The Flintstones." Nathaniel's love for sports, especially football and basketball, was matched only by his infectious sense of humor and his penchant for making those around him laugh. He was known for his golden smile, his love for singing out loud, and his joyous spirit that brought a light into every room he entered.
Despite life's challenges, Nathaniel's resilience shone brightly. He earned his high school diploma while incarcerated, a testament to his determination and will to better himself. He went on to work for the city of Baltimore and held various jobs thereafter, always striving to contribute positively to his community.
Nathaniel's love for life was palpable in his hobbies. He could often be found cruising the streets of Baltimore, always with a car or truck at his disposal, ready for the next adventure. His vibrant personality and zest for life were truly embodied in his nickname, "Nay Nay."
A service to honor Nathaniel's life will be held at 11:00 AM on May 29, 2026, at Calvin Scruggs Funeral Home located at 1412 E Preston St. Friends and family are invited to celebrate the life of a remarkable man whose laughter, kindness, and love will be missed but never forgotten.
Nathaniel Mayo leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and love that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to our dear Nay Nay, we hold onto the precious memories and the indelible mark he left on our lives.
