It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Nanette Walker on February 28, 2026, at the age of 62. Born on January 12, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, Nanette's journey was marked by resilience, love, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Nanette was the cherished daughter of the late Elizabeth "Lizsue" Walker and Augustus "Gus" Smalls. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brother Johnny Walker, her sister Helen T. Walker, and her son Verdell Vedo Walker, whose memories she carried tenderly in her heart. Nanette is survived by her devoted brother Andrew Smalls and her children: Ebony Robinson, Teresa Grandison, Kevin Walker, and Rachel Morris. Her legacy continues through her five treasured grandchildren: Corrie, Tyjana, Shelby, Ayden, and Knoble, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. Educated entirely in New York City, Nanette's journey through life was guided by a deep faith and a commitment to following where she felt called. For 15 years, she worked as a bus matron, a role she cherished for the opportunity it provided to nurture and care for young lives. Her work allowed her to balance time with her own children and the numerous foster children she welcomed into her heart and home. In the early 2000s, Nanette answered a calling to become a foster mother, opening her home and heart to countless children and families in need of love and support. She embraced each child as her own, providing a loving environment where they could grow and thrive. Her home, filled with warmth and laughter, was a sanctuary of acceptance and care. Nanette was renowned for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and boundless generosity. Her big heart was known far and wide, and her love for her family was unwavering. She was a fierce protector of her children, her home, and her beloved animals. Active in her church, she balanced her spiritual devotion with a zest for life, always ready for a good dance with family and friends. Nanette's passion for cooking was legendary; she found joy in feeding everyone around her, sharing not just meals but love and comfort through her culinary creations. Her kitchen was a place of gathering, where stories were shared, and bonds were strengthened. As we remember Nanette, we celebrate a life that was rich in love, laughter, and service. Her legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and an enduring spirit that touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she has departed this earthly realm, her spirit remains alive in the lives she shaped and the hearts she touched.
