NANCY PHIPPS CURTIS

August 23, 1947 — June 3, 2026

It is with profound sadness yet gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Nancy Phipps Curtis, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Nancy peacefully departed this world on June 3, 2026, at the age of 78, in the comforting embrace of her family and friends at her home. Born on August 23, 1947, in the close-knit community of Mound Bayou, Mississippi, Nancy was the cherished daughter of Pearline and Tommy Phipps Sr. From a young age, she displayed a vibrant spirit and a compassionate heart, qualities that would endear her to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Nancy's journey through life was marked by resilience and devotion. She graduated from John F. Kennedy Memorial High School in May 1965, setting the stage for a life filled with dedication to both her career and family. Nancy was a valued employee at Marshall Fields, now known as Macy’s, where she dedicated 30 years until her well-deserved retirement. Her commitment and professionalism earned her respect and admiration from colleagues and customers alike. On August 22, 1970, Nancy married the love of her life, Arthur Curtis. Together, they built a beautiful family, welcoming five children into the world: Lavearn, Nathaniel, Linda, Wanda, and Antoine. Nancy and Arthur shared an extraordinary bond, celebrating 55 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual support. Family was the cornerstone of Nancy's life. She was a nurturing mother, a doting grandmother to 24 grandchildren, and a proud great-grandmother to 36 great-grandchildren. Her home was always filled with joy, as she delighted in playing with her grandchildren and tending to her garden, where she found solace and happiness. Nancy’s kindness was boundless, and her smile was a beacon of warmth. She was a gentle soul whose presence brought comfort to those around her. Her enduring spirit lives on in the hearts of her surviving family members: her devoted husband Arthur Curtis, her loving children, her siblings Helen Phipps and Robert Phipps, and her expansive network of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, Pearline and Tommy, her infant son Michael Johnson, and her beloved daughter Lavearn Thomas. Though their loss is deeply felt, we take solace in knowing they are reunited in eternal peace. A celebration of Nancy’s life will take place on June 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the New Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, located at 3101 W. Warren Blvd., Chicago, IL 60612. Friends and family are invited to join us in honoring her memory and the legacy of love she leaves behind. The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered comfort and support during this difficult time. Perhaps you sent a card, sang a song, or said a prayer; your kindness will never be forgotten. Nancy Phipps Curtis will forever be remembered for her loving nature, her generosity of spirit, and the indelible mark she left on all who were fortunate to know her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, and her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift us all.
