Obituary With heavy hearts and profound respect, we announce the passing of Patricia (Marie McCrea) Eckhardt-Shrope, who left us peacefully after a brief illness on September 6, 2026. Born on July 10, 1932, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Patricia was a beacon of light and love to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Patricia was the cherished daughter of Patrick McCrea and Marie Brown McCrea. She spent her formative years in Jersey City, graduating from Henry Snyder High School before pursuing higher education at New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City. It was here that she laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to education and the arts. Patricia married her high school sweetheart, Henry Eckhardt, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love and family. After Henry's passing, Patricia found love again and married Peter Shrope, who also predeceased her. Despite the heartache of these losses, Patricia's spirit remained unbreakable—a testament to her strength and resilience. Her career as an educator began in Garfield, New Jersey, and she later continued to inspire young minds as a beloved kindergarten teacher at Elsmere Elementary School in Delmar, New York, for three decades. Her dedication to nurturing the potential of every child she taught left an indelible mark on countless lives. Patricia was proud of the fact that she was chosen as a master educator in a statewide initiative to pioneer a mentoring program for new teachers. The program, piloted in the Bethlehem Central school district, was heralded in the New York Times as a breakthrough strategy across the state. Music was Patricia's true passion, and she shared this love with everyone around her. She sang alongside her early collaborator Jerry Herman, who later became a renowned figure in musical theater. Patricia's involvement with various music organizations and her role on the board of the Sarasota Symphony highlighted her lifelong devotion to the arts. Her performances and enthusiasm for musical theater brought joy to her family and community, leaving a legacy of creativity and inspiration. Patricia's warmth and kindness were well known, and her friendships were treasured deeply. She was a source of unwavering support and love for her surviving children: Mark, Robert, James, and Kristina. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Amanda, Cayliegh, Nils, Stefan, Colin, and Madeline—and her great-grandchildren Wes, Isobel, and Henry. She was also a beloved stepmother to Peter, Catherine, and Laurel, and a cherished figure to her step-grandchildren Christopher, Emily, Shaffer, Elsbeth, Samantha, Rachel, and James, as well as her nine step-great grandchildren, including Colin, Graham, Claire, Sasha, Willow, Johnnie, Lydia, Luca and Ezra.
