Myrtle Dawson Kent, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully departed this world on September 17, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on April 8, 1934, in Birmingham, Alabama, Myrtle was the beloved daughter of Dennis L. Dawson, Sr. and Tollie Mae Blackmon Dawson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Arnett Delores Spruill, and her brothers Maynard "Me Me" Dawson and Dennis L. "DL" Dawson, Jr. Myrtle's life was a testament to love and dedication. She was a devoted mother to her two sons, Romero L. Christian, Sr. (Michele) of Hoover, Alabama, and Rev. Dr. Rory L. Kent, Sr. (Mary) of Montgomery, Alabama. She was also a loving mother figure to her nephew/son, Manard D. Spruill of Birmingham, Alabama. Her legacy of love continues through her five grandsons: Rory L. Kent, Jr. (Jennifer); Jamar D. Kent (Tyshelle); Justin D. Kent; Romero L. Christian, Jr.; and Rory L. Kent, III. Myrtle cherished her time with them and her eight great-grandchildren: Jacobie, Riley, Ryan, Jailen, Tamyra, Tytus, Jane’, and Jawel, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. Myrtle is also survived by her devoted siblings: Barbara Windom of Allentown, Pennsylvania; Berethea Greene of Brooklyn, New York; Sandra McQueen of Jamaica Queens, New York; and her brother, Clinton Dawson of Birmingham, Alabama. Her extended family includes a host of nieces, nephews, and countless friends who were touched by her kindness and warmth. Myrtle was a trailblazer. She was the first African American Police Dispatcher for the Birmingham, Alabama Police Department. For many years, she dedicated herself to serving her community as a Police Dispatcher and mentoring those who followed her until her health required her to step back. Her colleagues remember her as a diligent and compassionate professional who always had a kind word and a listening ear. Myrtle had a passion for crocheting and delighted in creating beautiful pieces for her family and friends. Her culinary skills were legendary, and she loved cooking meals that brought people together, creating lasting memories around the dining table. A service to celebrate Myrtle's remarkable life will be held on September 24, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at the W. E. Lusain Funeral Chapel. Details of the service address will be provided to family and friends. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Gentiva Hospice and Lashelle Exford, Myrtle's devoted caregivers, for their compassionate care. Myrtle Dawson Kent will be remembered for her unyielding love, her infectious laughter, and her unwavering dedication to her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and generosity that will be cherished by all who knew her.
