Mable Phyllis Slattery (Olson)

January 11, 1933 — October 14, 2025

Yankton, South Dakota, welcomed a precious soul into the world on January 11, 1933, when my mother was born to Joseph and Orpha (Gurney) Olson. Her remarkable journey came to a peaceful conclusion on October 14, 2025, as she transitioned from this world to the next, surrounded by the love of her family at home, after a courageous battle with sickness. She embarked on a life filled with love on September 8, 1949, when she married Emil Slattery in Ainsworth, Nebraska. Together, they shared 40 wonderful years, blessed with six children. Their union was a testament to love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. With a life deeply rooted in faith, she was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church. Her faith was her cornerstone, guiding her in every aspect of her life. She sang in the choir, cooked for Vacation Bible School, and prayed daily for her loved ones. Her gentle voice and unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on the church community, where she taught countless age groups and assisted with the annual Vacation Bible School. Though her work on the family farm was at the heart of her life, she also found fulfillment as a teacher’s assistant and in home health care. Her compassion and kindness extended beyond her family, touching the lives of all who knew her. Her hobbies reflected her love for the beauty of life. She delighted in tending to her yearly garden and flower beds, sharing the fruits of her labor with those around her. She was an adventurer at heart, enjoying fishing, the great outdoors, camping, and woodworking with her children. Her warm smile and gift for making everyone feel welcomed and valued endeared her to all. Her kindness and generosity were boundless, leaving a legacy of love that will be cherished by her surviving children: Vonnie and Kenny Bergfield, Ron and Pam Slattery, Linda Ford, and Lisa Slattery, along with her 14 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Emil Slattery, her children Emil Slattery Jr., Judy (Slattery) Horlick, Dan Slattery, and her dear parents Joseph and Orpha Olson. A celebration of her life will be held on May 13, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the American Legion Post 123, 201 East Buchanan St., Bassett, NE 68714. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice group for their compassionate care, allowing her to pass peacefully, surrounded by those who loved her most. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for your prayers, support, and kindness during this time. As we remember our mother, your support has brought us comfort. We are deeply grateful for your presence and love. In her memory, we share a cherished poem, "Footprints in the Sand," a testament to her faith and the comfort she found in her relationship with the Lord: One night I dreamed a dream... As we bid farewell, we find solace in knowing she is reunited with her beloved Emil and rests peacefully in the arms of her Creator. Thank you for honoring her memory and celebrating a life well-lived.
