In Loving Memory

James Leonard Barnes
October 28, 1944 — March 11, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of My Father, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who departed this world on March 11, 2026, after a valiant battle with a long illness. He was born on October 28, 1944, in the gentle embrace of Taylorsville, Mississippi, to the late Ardis and Jessie Barnes.
Growing up in a close-knit family, he was predeceased by his cherished parents, his brother Larry, and sister Patricia. Despite these profound losses, he remained a pillar of strength for his surviving family, including his devoted children: Anthony (Joel), Antoinette, Angelica, Angelina (Todd), James Jr. (Denise), and Jermaine. He was the proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and the doting great-grandfather to one precious great-grandchild.
A proud patriot, My Father answered the call to serve his country with honor and dignity. He served in the United States Army, where he saw combat during the Vietnam War. His bravery and dedication earned him an honorable discharge, along with the prestigious Purple Heart and Bronze Star, testaments to his courage and commitment.
After returning home, he laid down roots in Detroit, Michigan, where he embarked on a dedicated career at Chrysler. Known for his unwavering work ethic and integrity, he retired in 1996, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and camaraderie among his colleagues.
Beyond his professional life, My Father found joy in the simple pleasures of life. A passionate fisherman, he spent countless serene hours by the water, casting his line and finding solace in nature's embrace. His love for dogs was equally boundless, and he often welcomed the companionship and unconditional love of his four-legged friends.
My Father was a man of quiet wisdom and gentle humor, whose presence brought warmth and comfort to those around him. He was a steadfast anchor for his family, offering guidance, support, and love in abundance. His legacy is carried forward by the lives he touched and the values he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
A service to honor and celebrate his remarkable life will be held on March 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Elmwood Cemetery, located at 1200 Elmwood Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48207. Family and friends are invited to gather and pay their respects, sharing memories and bidding farewell to a man who meant so much to so many.
In this season of loss, we find solace in the enduring love he leaves behind, a testament to a life well-lived and a soul well-loved. May he rest in peace, forever remembered, forever cherished.
