My dad

February 24, 1963 — April 24, 2026

In loving memory, we honor the life of a remarkable man, known affectionately to many simply as "Dad," who passed away peacefully at his home in the early hours of April 24, 2026, at the age of 63. His passing was a serene transition, as he succumbed to hemothorax, a condition he faced with courage and grace. Born on February 24, 1963, in the vibrant city of New York, NY, Dad was the beloved son of Abu Kareem Shabazz and Lilly Mae Byrd. From his early years, he was surrounded by the warmth and strength of a family that instilled in him values that he carried throughout his life. Dad was a man of profound integrity and kindness, whose love and generosity touched the lives of everyone he met. He was the proud father of his first son, Tarik Jamal, and his children Khalid Ibn and Asia, who predeceased him and whom he cherished deeply. The love he had for them was immeasurable, and their memories continued to be a source of strength and inspiration to him throughout his life. He is survived by his devoted brothers Marcus, Anwar, Alsil, and Amir, who stood by him through thick and thin, sharing in the joys and sorrows of life with unwavering support. Dad's bond with his family was unbreakable, a testament to the close-knit relationships he nurtured over the years. Though he faced the unimaginable heartache of losing his children, Dad's heart was filled with the joy and laughter of his grandchildren, Nazir, Khaliya, Tiara, Trinity, and Tristian. His role as a grandfather was one he cherished, bringing endless smiles and wisdom to their lives. His legacy will live on through them, as they carry forward his spirit of love, kindness, and resilience. In his later years, Dad found companionship and solace with his devoted fiancé, Terry. Together they shared dreams, laughter, and the comfort of a love that was truly special. Terry stood by his side with unwavering devotion, a constant source of love and light in his life. Dad's journey on this earth was a testament to a life well-lived. He touched the hearts of many with his gentle spirit, infectious laughter, and unwavering dedication to those he loved. As we gather to celebrate his life, we remember him as a beacon of hope and love, who taught us the true meaning of family and resilience. Though his physical presence will be dearly missed, the essence of his spirit will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in eternal peace, reunited with his beloved children, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all. A memorial service celebrating Dad’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory and share in the stories and love that he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity close to Dad's heart, continuing his legacy of giving and compassion.
