In Loving Memory of Ms. Mariah Z. Thompson
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ms. Mariah Z. Thompson, who left this world on June 22, 2026, just shy of her sixteenth birthday. Born on June 30, 2010, in Whiteville, North Carolina, Mariah was a gentle soul whose radiant spirit touched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Mariah was the beloved daughter of Justin Thompson and LaShanda Marie Gowens. She grew up surrounded by love and warmth in Whiteville and was a cherished member of her community. Her educational journey began and blossomed within the Whiteville City Schools District, where she made an indelible mark on her peers and teachers alike.
From a young age, Mariah found joy and expression in dance, a hobby that allowed her to convey the emotions she so often kept hidden. Yet, beyond her love for dance, Mariah was known for her innate ability to brighten the days of those around her. Even on days when her own happiness seemed elusive, Mariah was the beacon of light for her friends, ensuring that no one went without a smile.
Her teenage years were filled with the delightful quirks and passions that made Mariah so unique. She had a knack for snapping pictures of her favorite outfits, perfectly styled lashes, and her impeccably slayed edges. But behind the fashion and style was a young woman carrying her own quiet storms with grace and resilience. Despite her own battles, Mariah always chose to be the sunshine for others, a testament to her selfless and loving nature.
While Mariah may not have accepted many into her inner circle, those she loved felt her affection deeply. Her calls to Aunt Nae or Jocelyn to rescue her from boredom, sharing the latest "tea" with T.J. and Sanniyah, and ensuring she was never "caught slipping" with her trusty Vaseline, are memories that will forever be cherished. Her frequent visits to Mr. Leach for banter, sharing gentle conversations with Mrs. Leach, and her cheerful presence in Mrs. Susan Baldwin's company are all part of the beautiful tapestry of her life. Ms. McAllister's room, where she often sought solace and snacks, will forever miss her vibrant spirit.
Though Mariah's time with us was heartbreakingly short, she fulfilled her ultimate assignment—to spread love, joy, and kindness wherever she went. Her face and spirit will forever be etched in our hearts, a reminder of the profound impact one young life can have.
A service to celebrate Mariah's life will be held on July 1, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Brunswick Waccamaw Association Building, located at 600 Pinelog Road, Whiteville, NC 28472. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the charity of your choice in Mariah's honor, a gesture that mirrors her own giving heart.
Mariah Z. Thompson's legacy is one of love, resilience, and unwavering kindness. She leaves behind a world that is better for having been graced by her presence, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
