In Loving Memory of Mrs. Josephine Cheatham Davie It is with profound sadness and heartfelt gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Mrs. Josephine Cheatham Davie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. Josephine peacefully left this world on her 79th birthday, July 14, 2026, surrounded by her cherished family in the comfort of her home in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on July 14, 1947, in Indianapolis, Josephine was the treasured daughter of James W. and Roberta Cheatham. From a young age, she displayed an extraordinary talent for music and a deep commitment to education and service, qualities that would define her life's journey. Josephine's early academic pursuits led her to Broad Ripple High School, and she further enriched her education with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Martin University. Her thirst for knowledge and her unwavering faith inspired her to earn a Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary and a Master of Teaching from Marian University. A woman of many talents, Josephine began her professional career as a celebrated recording artist and performer. Known as one of Indiana's R&B-Jazz Legends, she captivated audiences nationwide with her soulful voice, most notably as part of the duo, The Sentimentals, alongside her dear friend and musical "brother," Henry Hinch. Her career in music was marked by passion and joy, and her contributions to the arts community were deeply appreciated. Josephine's entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she transitioned from music to become the owner and president of Executive Travel Service, Inc., one of the pioneering black-owned travel agencies in Indianapolis. Her business acumen, coupled with her partnership with American Airlines, brought her considerable success and admiration. Her calling in ministry led her to pastor Christian Education at Westview Christian Church and Christ the King Christian Church in Indianapolis. As a dedicated chaplain at St. Vincent Hospital and Hendricks Regional Health, she provided comfort and guidance to countless individuals during their times of need. Her compassionate service extended to her role as a hospice chaplain, where she spent 12 years supporting patients and families with grace and empathy. Josephine's love for education and children inspired her return to teaching in Indianapolis Public Schools, where she touched the lives of her students with her warmth and wisdom. Her dedication to nurturing young minds was evident in her work as a tutor and educator. A devoted member of New Life Community Church under the leadership of Rev. Andrew Hunt III, Josephine served as a deacon and contributed to the Christian Education and Music Ministries. Her unwavering faith and love for Jesus Christ guided her throughout her life. Josephine was a cherished member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., and the National Sorority of Professional Teachers, where she built lifelong friendships and shared her passion for service and education. Her life was a testament to her compassion, readiness to help, and the deep love she had for her family. Josephine is survived by her loving husband, Robert Davie, whom she married on June 25, 2024. Her legacy continues through her devoted daughters, June, JoNi (Herman) Kelley, Joey (Michael Sturgis), and Johnnetta (Tracy) Springer, as well as her 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She is also fondly remembered by her cousins, Robert Cooper, Mary Williams, Jesse Chavous, and Josephine Cabbell, along with her extended family at New Life Community Church and her numerous close friends. Josephine was predeceased by her parents, James W. and Roberta Cheatham, and her former husband, Warren W. Manns. Though she had no siblings, her life was enriched by a wide circle of family and friends who cherished her dearly. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks for your prayers, kindness, and support during this period of mourning. Your love and generosity will forever be remembered and appreciated. In celebrating Josephine's remarkable life, we honor her legacy of love, faith, and service. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing she made the world a brighter place for all who knew her.
