Mrs. Bernice (Sampson) Scott
January 15, 1931 — July 10, 2026
On the morning of July 10, 2026, the world lost a remarkable woman, Mrs. Bernice (Sampson) Scott, who peacefully departed this life at the age of 95, under the tender care of Suncrest Hospice at Canterbury Long Term Care Facility in Pittsburgh, PA. Born in Pittsburgh on January 15, 1931, Bernice was a beacon of love and warmth to all who knew her.
Raised by her beloved mother, Laura Jones Sampson, Bernice was a proud graduate of Rankin High School in Rankin, PA. Her career took her to Kaufman's Department Store, where she served with grace and distinction in the White Linen Forbes Room on the 11th floor for 18 years. Her smile and attentiveness left a lasting impression, especially when serving distinguished guests such as Mayors Richard Caliguiri and Sophie Masloff. Bernice's professional journey also included vibrant days as a barmaid in some of Rankin's finest establishments, where her humor and charm were cherished by many.
In her personal life, Bernice was blessed with a loving marriage to her late husband, Charles Scott. Together, they created a tapestry of memories filled with love, laughter, and a shared sense of humor. Their adventures together, whether traveling, decorating for the holidays, or enjoying quiet evenings watching television, spoke volumes of their deep bond.
Bernice’s heart was further warmed by her family. She was a devoted mother to her children: Melvin Sampson, Betty Sampson Young (Lee Young), Richard Sampson, Charmaine Sampson, and her bonus daughter, Twana Patton. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Ramei Wall-Reed, Maurice Tinsley, Ricco McDonald, and four others, as well as 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Her family circle was wide, including cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
In her later years, Bernice moved to Ebenezer Towers in the Hill District, where she spent her days in the joy of companionship and simple pleasures. She loved playing bingo with friends, indulging in thrilling horror movies, and finding solace and wisdom in her Bible. Her Sundays were often spent watching church services on television, her spirit uplifted by the word of God. Music was another passion, and she often found joy in listening to John Legend while taking car rides with her children and grandchildren.
Bernice is predeceased by her husband Charles Scott, her mother Laura Jones Sampson, her brother Leroy Sampson, her grandson Dante L. Patton, and her beloved fur baby, Tom. Her departure leaves a void in the hearts of many, yet her spirit and legacy of love remain a guiding light for her family and friends.
A service to honor and celebrate Bernice’s life will be held at Heavenly Vision Ministries, located at 9601 Frankstown Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Bernice’s memory to organizations or causes dear to her heart.
The family of Bernice Scott wishes to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during our time of loss. Your presence at the service and kind words have brought us immense comfort. A very heartfelt thank you to MaryJo at Family Hospice, Doreen at Canterbury Place, and the entire team at Suncrest Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.
Bernice will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, her unwavering faith, and the profound love she shared with all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
