It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Mr. Benjamin B. Russell on April 23, 2026. Ben departed this world as he lived his life, with tranquility and grace, in the comfort of his sleep. Born on January 18, 1938, in the welcoming embrace of Alexander City, Ben was the cherished son of Robert Alston Russell and Adelia McConnell Russell. Ben was a beacon of light and inspiration, a man whose curiosity and boundless enthusiasm for life knew no bounds. He graduated from Benjamin Russell High School and furthered his education at the University of Alabama, where he cultivated a love for learning that would become a hallmark of his diverse career. Ben was an extraordinary individual whose talents spanned numerous disciplines, earning him the affectionate title of a renaissance man. His pursuits as an aviation master, stunt pilot, and hot air balloon aeronaut demonstrated a spirit of adventure that few could match. As an artist, welder, and draftsman, he created beauty in both form and function. An author, humorist, and water conservationist, Ben's words and deeds were a source of wisdom and joy to all who encountered them. A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Alexander City and Church in the Pines, Ben's faith was woven into the fabric of his being, guiding him in his lifelong commitment to serving others. Known for his dedication to supporting children and families, he embodied the virtues of compassion, kindness, and community service. Above all, Ben was a beloved family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Luanne Russell, who stood by his side through life's many adventures. Together, they nurtured a family rooted in love and unity. Ben leaves behind a legacy embodied by his children: James Russell, Deborah Russell, Janice Russell, Donna Russell, Skee Russell, Melva Russell, Edwin Russell, and Sandra Russell. His legacy extends to his 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, whose lives he touched with his boundless affection and wisdom. His family also includes many cherished cousins and extended family who will continue to carry his spirit in their hearts. A service celebrating Ben's remarkable life will be held on April 28, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Church in the Pines. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live-streamed at www.radneyfuneralhome.com. In honor of Ben's passion for community support and environmental stewardship, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Children's Harbor or the Lake Martin Resource Association (LMRA). Benjamin B. Russell's life was a testament to the power of curiosity, love, and unwavering faith. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. May we honor his memory by living with the same zest and compassion that he exemplified every day.
