Morrie Schwartz

December 20, 1916 — November 4, 1995

Morrie Schwartz, a beloved husband, father, educator, and friend, passed away on November 4, 1995, at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with ALS. Born on December 20, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York, Morrie's life was a testament to resilience, wisdom, and the profound impact of human connection. Raised in Brooklyn by his parents, Charlie and Minnie, Morrie's life was touched by early loss when his mother, Minnie, passed away when he was just 8 years old. Despite this hardship, Morrie grew into a man of remarkable strength and compassion. He met the love of his life, Charlotte, whom he married in 1951. Their marriage spanned 44 beautiful years, filled with love and partnership, and together they raised two devoted sons, Jon and Rob. Charlotte and their sons remain as the cherished legacy of Morrie's deep commitment to family. Morrie's academic journey began at the City College of New York, leading him to earn both a master's and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His passion for learning and teaching found its perfect expression in his nearly 40-year tenure as a sociology professor at Brandeis University. Morrie's classrooms were not just spaces for academic growth but also for personal transformation, where he inspired countless students to explore the depths of their humanity. Beyond the lecture halls, Morrie was a pioneer in building community-oriented organizations, focusing on mental health advocacy and education. His dedication to grassroots human connection and spirituality left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Morrie was a man who saw beyond societal conventions, opting for genuine relationships over rigid affiliations. Morrie's interests were as diverse as they were profound; he was a lifelong advocate for self-expression, human connection, and physical movement. Even as he faced the challenges of his illness, Morrie transformed his final months into a poignant lesson on living with intention, love, and grace. His life became a living sermon, dedicated to thanking his caregivers, appreciating those around him, and offering universal wisdom to all who would listen. Morrie's passing was marked with a private ceremony, a reflection of the intimate and personal connections he valued throughout his life. In honoring his memory, the family kindly suggests donations to the ALS Association (National Office) in Saint Paul, MN, an organization that works tirelessly to support those affected by ALS. Morrie Schwartz's legacy is one of enduring love, wisdom, and the transformative power of human connection. While he may no longer walk among us, his lessons and spirit will continue to guide and inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
