It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved "Mom" Atkins on a quiet day, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family, after a long and courageous battle with illness. Born on September 22, 1939, in New Haven, Connecticut, she was a beacon of warmth and joy to all who knew her. The daughter of Vivian and Ollie Atkins, Mom was raised in a home filled with love and laughter, alongside her siblings Diane Cobb, Joan, and Geary Atkins. She was predeceased by her devoted parents, her cherished sisters, and her beloved son, James Phaon Claxton. Together, they are now reunited in eternal peace. Mom was educated in the New Haven School System and graduated from Commercial High School, where she cultivated both her academic skills and her lifelong love of learning. Her career as a self-employed Executive Housekeeper spanned over 30 years, during which she brought her remarkable work ethic, meticulous attention to detail, and vibrant personality to every task. She is survived by her adoring children Christine Claxton, Tracy Claxton, Geary Claxton, and Terri Askew (Raymond), who carry forward her legacy of love and resilience. Her brother, Geary Atkins, remains a pillar of support for the family. Mom's life was further enriched by her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, each of whom she cherished dearly. Mom's passions were as varied as they were heartfelt. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as watching movies, cooking for her family and friends, and delighting in the glow of Christmas lights. Her love for coloring and her spirited conversations with people showcased her playful nature. A devoted churchgoer, she drew strength from her faith and shared that light with all around her. Her special bond with her favorite cousin, Dennis Jarman, whom she fondly remembered babysitting, was a testament to her enduring sense of family. Known for her quick wit and warm personality, Mom had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. Her kindness and humor left an indelible mark on the many lives she touched, creating a ripple effect of joy and compassion that will endure for generations to come. A service to honor and celebrate her remarkable life will be held at 9:30 AM at Colonial Funeral Home, 123 Circular Ave, Hamden, CT 06514. In this time of remembrance, we extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Hamden Health Care for their exceptional care and support during her time there, with a special acknowledgment from her daughter, Terri Askew. Mom's journey was one of love, laughter, and unwavering strength. Her memory will forever remain a source of inspiration and comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we gather to mourn her passing, we also celebrate the beautiful legacy she leaves behind—one of love, compassion, and joy. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
