In Loving Memory of Michelle L’Ray Burrell-Williams
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michelle L’Ray Burrell-Williams, affectionately known as Penny, who left this world peacefully on June 18, 2026. Born on December 15, 1962, in the heart of Indianapolis, Indiana, Penny graced the world with her vibrant spirit for 63 cherished years.
Penny was the beloved daughter of Leon and Dorothy Burrell, who nurtured her with love and instilled in her a passion for learning and laughter. She began her educational journey at grade schools 71 and 81, eventually graduating from John Marshall High School, where she forged friendships and garnered memories that would last a lifetime.
With an adventurous spirit, Penny embarked on a diverse career path that took her from the bustling kitchens of Wendy's in Fairbanks, Alaska, to roles at GSF USA and Gannett Media. In each position, she was known not only for her leadership and dedication but also for her ability to brighten the day of everyone she encountered.
Penny’s life was a tapestry of rich interests and passions. She found immense joy in writing short stories and delving into the lives of others through biographies and memoirs. Her love for classic movies and sitcoms was rivaled only by her enthusiasm for sports, where she could often be found cheering with infectious laughter. Her laughter was a hallmark of her personality—a sound that brought warmth and comfort to all who heard it.
A true music aficionado, Penny's taste was as eclectic as it was expansive. From the soulful melodies of The Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson to the timeless tunes of The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, and Sir Elton John, her playlist was a reflection of her open heart and love for life. Whether it was the jazzy croon of Frank Sinatra, the velvet voice of Nat King Cole, or the electrifying guitar of Jimi Hendrix, Penny’s appreciation for music was boundless. Her heart danced to the rhythms of Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, and even the contemporary beats of Lil Wayne.
Penny was not just a lover of stories and sounds; she was a seeker of experiences. She delighted in travel, the serenity of beachside relaxation, and the exhilaration of live concerts. Through these adventures, she cultivated an appreciation for the diverse beauty of the world.
Her legacy of laughter, love, and light will be celebrated on July 11, 2026, at 2:30 PM, at Sprowl’s Funeral Home, located at 1134 W. 30th St. Family, friends, and those who were touched by Penny’s generous spirit are invited to gather in her honor, to share stories, music, and memories that encapsulate the essence of a life fully lived.
As we bid farewell to our dear Penny, we find solace in the knowledge that her spirit continues to dance among the stars, forever inspiring us to live with joy and embrace the beauty in every moment. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and an unyielding zest for life that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Rest in peace, dear Penny. Your laughter, love, and light will echo in our hearts forever.
