June 4, 1955 – July 23, 2026 Michelle D. Avery, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at Samaritan Medical Center in her beloved hometown of Watertown, NY. Born on June 4, 1955, to Phyliss and Fred Johnson, Michelle was a spirited individual who left an indelible mark on everyone she met. Michelle spent her formative years in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1972. It was here that she met the love of her life, James Avery. They married on February 16, 1974, and together they built a beautiful life, raising three children: Amy (Bert) Filley, James (Janelle) Avery, and Chad Avery. Their home was filled with laughter, warmth, and the joyful chaos of family life. Michelle's career in nursing at Mercy Hospital and Whispering Pines illustrated her nurturing spirit and dedication to helping others. Her career was tragically cut short due to an automobile accident, but her compassion for others remained steadfast throughout her life. Michelle's personality was as vibrant as it was unique. In her short stature, she carried a heart as expansive as the sky and an attitude that was nothing short of legendary. Her family fondly remembers her saying, "God made her short because if she'd been six feet tall, she'd have taken over the world." Her fiery spirit was matched only by her fierce loyalty and love for her family and friends. Michelle had a fuse shorter than her height, and a mouth that never found a filter, but her love was boundless. She moved mountains, fought battles, and stood by her loved ones through thick and thin. Her life was enriched by her passions for craft fairs, farmers markets, and countless family gatherings. Sundays were reserved for volleyball parties, where she cheered the loudest and savored every moment spent with her family. Michelle's greatest joy was spoiling her grandchildren, Alexis Filley, Lynsey (Donnie) Filley, Brandon Ellsworth, Mackenzie Avery, Blake Avery, Eric Dewilde, Hunter Benjerman, Xavier, Riley, and Liza Monroe. Her legacy extends to her great-granddaughter, Desirae Haggard, who carries forward her great-grandmother's spirited legacy. Michelle's passing is mourned by her devoted husband, James, her children, grandchildren, and her wide circle of friends. She is predeceased by her parents and nephew, but her spirit endures in the hearts of those she loved. A celebration of Michelle's life will be held on July 28, 2026, at Reed and Benoit, 632 State St, Watertown, NY 13601. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, as a tribute to Michelle's generous nature. As her family remembers her with love, they hold onto her words, "Love You More," and the fond memories of her saying, "Wait till your father gets home." Michelle D.
