Michael J. Mickens, Sr. AKA Mayor McCheez

Michael Mickens, born on August 9, 1964, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on August 17, 2026. He was a beloved father, brother, and friend whose life was filled with laughter, love, and dedication. Michael was the cherished son of the late Mary Mickens Barringer and Melvin Hardy and the brother of the late Otis P. Mickens, Jr. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his eight children: Michael, Aaron, Melvin, Lawrence, Rikavia, Asharee, Deja, and Tequaisha. Their mothers, Melissa Callahan and Latavia Mickens, remember him as a devoted partner and father. Michael was also the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren, who will surely carry forward his spirit and zest for life. A graduate of New Brunswick Vocational High School, Michael found his calling under the hood of cars, dedicating over 40 years of his life to his craft as an automobile mechanic. His expertise and passion for his work were matched only by his love for football, particularly his devotion to the Dallas Cowboys. Michael could often be found sharing stories of his team’s triumphs, his laughter echoing and lighting up the room. Michael was known for his infectious joy. He had an extraordinary ability to lift spirits with his jokes and genuine warmth, transforming any somber moment into one of light-heartedness and smiles. His laughter and joyfulness were characteristics that endeared him to everyone he met, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. A service celebrating Michael's life will be held on August 29, 2026, at 4:00 PM at Gause Funeral Home, located at 625 S. Holland Pkwy. in Bartow, Florida. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to friends and the staff at Gause Funeral Home for their compassionate support and services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Michael's honor, celebrating his spirit of generosity and kindness.
