Michael Wayne Barney
December 18, 1944 — December 5, 2025
Michael Wayne Barney, a devoted father, cherished brother, and beloved friend, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the age of 80, due to respiratory failure from pneumonia. Born on December 18, 1944, in Watertown, NY, Michael's life was a testament to service, warmth, and a zest for life's simple pleasures.
Michael grew up in a loving home with his parents, Wayne and Elizabeth "Betty" Wise Barney, who predeceased him. He was the middle sibling to his cherished sisters, Patricia Truesdell and Sheila Pullus, both of whom remain in Watertown, NY, and hold dear the memories of their brother's infectious laughter and steadfast support. He was also proceeded in death by his life-long friend, Don Scott.
Upon graduating from Watertown High School, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army, a decision that would define much of his life's journey. His career spanned an impressive 32 years, during which he served in both the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. His dedication to his country was unwavering, and he carried his experiences with grace and humility.
In 1980, Michael and his family relocated to Leander, TX, where he continued his service in the Army Reserves and embarked on a civil service career as an auto mechanic. His love of travel led him to become a flight attendant for American Airlines as well as pursue an interest in culinary arts by attending pastry chef school, showcasing his diverse interests and willingness to embrace new challenges.
Michael was also a proud member of the American Legion, where he found camaraderie and continued to support his fellow veterans.
A man of many talents, Michael found joy in carpentry, gardening, and travel. His collections of stamps, spoons, and foreign tinder were a testament to his love for exploration and detail. Each piece in his collection told a story, much like the stories he shared with friends and family, always with a twinkle in his eye and a warm smile.
Michael's personal qualities were as varied as his interests. He was known for his friendly, upbeat demeanor and had an unparalleled ability to make friends wherever he went. His laughter was contagious, and his kindness knew no bounds.
Though his marriage to Betty Fruedenburg ended after 22 years, their bond remained strong, transforming into a lasting friendship. Together, they raised two wonderful children: Travis Barney of Bryan, TX, and Heather Dornwell of La Grange, TX. Heather and her husband, James, blessed Michael with two granddaughters, Emily and Claire Dornwell, who brought immense joy to his life.
Michael is also survived by his nieces, Tina Evans and Wendy Tennies, who admired and adored their uncle's spirit and generosity.
As we remember Michael Wayne Barney, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by service, love, and an unwavering optimism. His legacy will continue in the stories shared by those who loved him and the impact he made on every life he touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held at the local American Legion, where friends and family will gather to honor a remarkable man whose life was a beacon of warmth and generosity.
