Michael Thomas McDonough

May 26, 1941 — June 11, 2026

Michael Thomas McDonough, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by the warmth and love of his children after a courageous 15-month illness. Born on May 26, 1941, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Ruth Ann Hayes McDonough and Thomas F. McDonough, Michael lived a life full of love, laughter, and friendship. Michael was a proud alumnus of Loras Academy where he completed both his grade school and high school education. His academic journey continued at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, where he cultivated a lifelong passion for the Fighting Irish and their sports teams. A dedicated member of the Notre Dame Club, Michael could often be found cheering on his beloved teams with an enthusiasm that was contagious to all who knew him. Professionally, Michael excelled in sales, a field where his natural charm and quick wit allowed him to thrive. He was a man who could, as they say, "sell sand in the desert," leaving a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike. In addition to his sales career, Michael ventured into the restaurant industry, co-owning establishments in Dallas, Texas, and Nashville, Tennessee, with his dear friends. These ventures were as much about camaraderie and shared dreams as they were about business. Michael was known for his quick wit and the ability to make friends wherever he went. His humor and warmth left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered, turning simple acquaintances into lifelong friends. It was these qualities that endeared him to so many and ensured that his circle of friends grew with every new chapter in his life. He is survived by his loving children: Kate McDonough Greer, Jennifer McDonough Rosenkranz, and her son, Ethan Brooks Rosenkranz, who brought immense joy to his grandfather's life, and Michael Thomas McDonough and his wife, Alissa David McDonough. Michael's legacy of love and laughter will live on through his grandson, Ethan, who will carry forward the cherished memories and values imparted by his grandfather. Michael was predeceased by his devoted parents, Ruth and Tom McDonough, his dear sister, Kathleen Kowalski, and his cherished niece, Katie Kowalski. He is also survived by a multitude of friends who stood by him throughout his life, sharing in his joys and supporting him through his challenges. In celebrating Michael's life, we remember a man whose spirit was as vibrant as his laughter and whose heart was as generous as his friendship. His memory will forever be a guiding light to those who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held to honor Michael's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Michael's name to the University of Notre Dame, reflecting his enduring love for his alma mater. As we say goodbye to Michael, we carry forward his legacy of friendship, kindness, and boundless enthusiasm for life. May his soul rest in peace, surrounded by the love and memories of those he cherished.
