October 22, 1948 — March 22, 2026
It is with profound sadness and deep love that we announce the passing of Michael Stephen Villanueva, who departed this world peacefully on March 22, 2026, at the age of 77. With his beloved wife Mickie by his side, and surrounded by the warmth of his family, Michael left us with a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Born on October 22, 1948, in the vibrant town of Nogales, Arizona, Michael was the cherished son of Antonio and Maxine Gunsalus Villanueva, who preceded him in death. He was the younger brother to Edward Villanueva, who, along with his family, remains to celebrate Michael’s life and legacy.
Michael was a man of great intellect and creativity, traits that earned him a graduation from Nogales High School in 1966, followed by a Bachelor of Science degree in Art from Arizona State University. His passion for art and design was further honed through continuing education courses at LA Trade Tech, a testament to his lifelong dedication to learning and personal growth.
In service to his country, Michael proudly joined the Air Force Reserves, dedicating two years before transitioning to the Army Reserves for an additional four years. His commitment to service was a reflection of his honorable character—an honorable man who was as dedicated to his country as he was to his family and passions.
Michael's professional journey took him into the world of art and graphic design, where he carved out a distinguished career primarily within the grocery industry. His creative talents flourished as he worked with food brokers, manufacturers, and marketing design agencies. Michael concluded his career with Experian Credit Corporation, retiring at the age of 66 after a lifetime of hard work and artistic contribution.
In 1997, Michael married Michalene Sharp, affectionately known as Mickie. Together, they blended their families, nurturing a strong bond among their children—son Scott Villanueva, and stepdaughters Christina Bertrand, Erin Sharp, and Lynn-Marie Rivera—and their spouses. Michael was a devoted and loving grandfather to eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, each of whom he adored and who brought immense joy to his life.
Michael's life was rich with passions and hobbies, from his spirited involvement in the Huntington Beach Motorcycle Association to his love for guns and firearms. As a marksman shooter, he showcased his dedication to precision and excellence, becoming a self-taught scholar of war weapons and their histories.
Known for his "tongue in cheek" humor and the ability to light up any room he entered, Michael was a man of kindness, generosity, and vivaciousness. His presence guaranteed laughter and good times, and he remained a beloved and genuine character throughout his life.
His family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Parentis Health Board & Care. Their incredible support over the past 2.5 years provided Michael with comfort and dignity during his final days. Arda, Julie, Marvin, and Nina became an integral part of our family, and we hold them forever in our hearts.
Michael Stephen Villanueva leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his family and friends. As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we hold dear the memories of his laughter, love, and the indelible mark he leaves on our hearts. May his soul rest in peace, and may his spirit continue to inspire us always.
