Michael (Mike) Safarewitz

September 4, 1939 — September 18, 2026

Michael Safarewitz, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away at his home on September 18, 2026, after a courageous 21-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 4, 1939, in Brooklyn, NY, Mike was the beloved son of Benjamin Safarewitz and Ida Chesnowitz/Safarewitz, both of whom predeceased him. Mike's life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and warmth. He grew up with a deep love for music, playing the saxophone in his boyhood band, "The Mello Notes." His passion for music continued throughout his life, with a particular fondness for jazz and, more recently, the soothing sounds of tai chi music. One of his favorite songs was "I Ran Down Every Dream," sung by Tommy McLain, which resonated deeply with his spirit of adventure and perseverance. He pursued his education at the University of Connecticut before serving his country with honor in the U.S. Army for four years. Following his service, Mike embarked on a successful 30-year career as a computer specialist in the Information Technology field at Dictaphone/Pitney Bowes. After retiring, he found joy in a second career as a convention planner for the Army Aviation Association of America, where he worked for an additional ten years. Mike was known for his love of nature and ability to connect with everyone he met. He enjoyed riding horses as a member of the Connecticut Governor's Horse Guard, taking hikes, and off-road Jeep rides in the Arizona desert. His culinary skills were unmatched, and he took great pleasure in cooking and sharing meals with loved ones. In recent years, he found peace and purpose in teaching tai chi, emphasizing fall prevention and the art of balance in life, embodying the principle of "standing strong like a tree, but flowing like a river." Mike leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Judy Fesko Safarewitz, his two children, Deborah Sides and husband Chuck, Brian Safarewitz and wife Jacqui; and seven grandchildren: Sarah, Brianna, Alexandra, Austin, Ben, Rachel, and Caroline. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Dominic. Mike is survived by his brother, David Safarewitz, and a large, loving extended family, including several cousins, sisters and brothers-in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The family will privately share future dates for Celebration of Life gatherings to honor Mike in both Tucson, AZ, and Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in his memory at https://pancan.org/donate Michael's legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering strength. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
