"Coach" Michael James Sweatfield, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on September 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family and close friends. Born on February 24, 1941, in Park City, Utah, Michael's life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and an unwavering love for those around him. Michael was the cherished son of Howard and Marjorie Sweatfield. He grew up in Park City with his parents, siblings, Jan and Lee, and a number of close relatives. In this nurturing environment he gained a passion for loving others and learning. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Leland Sweatfield, and several aunts and uncles whom he dearly missed. Michael left Utah at the age of 9. Michael's educational journey took place mainly in the public schools in Vallejo, CA. He then went on to Vallejo Junior College and Sacramento State College, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and was a well recognized football player. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a lifelong career in education. He touched countless lives as a teacher and coach. Michael's career was marked by his tenure as a wrestling, badminton, and football coach, culminating as a respected athletic director. His passion for sports and his commitment to nurturing young talent made a significant impact on many students' lives. He was a mentor and example for young adults. Beyond his professional life, Michael was a man of diverse interests. He loved golfing, fishing, water skiing, traveling, The SF Niners, celebrations with friends, and above all, spending quality time with his children and grandchildren. Michael was inducted into the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame, and he served as the President of the Blue Rock Springs Golf Club. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment shared with them. Known for his kindness and caring nature, Michael had a genuine love for children of all ages and a deep commitment to his community. His home was always filled with laughter and warmth as he delighted in entertaining his friends and family. Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Zenaida "Zee" Magee Sweatfield, who was his partner in life and love. He leaves behind his daughter, Jill Turner, son Michael Todd Sweatfield, and his stepdaughter Cynthia Sarmiento. His legacy is lovingly carried forward by his grandchildren: Skye, Sage, Audria, Craig, Rialle, Roel, Raina, and Mattea (in loving memory), and his sister-in-law, Donna who will forever remember the love and wisdom he imparted. A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held at 12:00 PM on October 3, 2026, at Saint Vincent's Catholic Church in Vallejo, CA. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well-lived and a man deeply loved.
