February 18, 1943 — September 30, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael “Mac” Makelky, who left this world on September 30, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on February 18, 1943, in Glendive, Montana, Mac was the beloved son of Henry and Brita Makelky. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Maylou, and brother-in-law Bob, all of whom he deeply cherished.
A kind and generous soul, Mac touched the lives of many with his genuine warmth and infectious smile. Those who were fortunate to know him, knew him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Mac is survived by his loving wife, Arby, with whom he shared a beautiful life since their marriage in Minot, North Dakota, in 1988. Together, they embarked on a journey that took them from Velva, ND, to Mac’s dream home in Fort Peck, Montana, then to Wester SD. and eventually to their most recent residence in Mandan, ND.
Mac was the proud father of his son Rick, and his stepchildren Dawn (Robert), Mark (Paula). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Ashley (Dustin), Brad (Ashley), Calli, Brent, Alex, Rachel, and Sarah, as well as his great-grandchildren, Quinn, Mason, Addison, Dextin, and Denley. His siblings, Joan, Patti, and Bob, also survive him and will forever hold him in their hearts.
In 1961, Mac joined the Navy and served with dedication until his discharge in 1966. His professional life was defined by his expertise as a master electrician, and his most recent role as a powerhouse operator at Fort Peck Dam was a source of great pride. After years of hard work and commitment, Mac retired in Webster, South Dakota.
A man of many talents, Mac’s hands were never idle. His passion for woodworking led him to create beautiful pieces, from his grandchildren's cradles to intricate cabinets, roll top desk and lifelike duck decoys. His workshop was his sanctuary, where he pursued perfection in every project. Mac also loved the outdoors, spending time hunting, trap shooting, and skeet shooting. His sweet tooth was legendary, and he never passed up the opportunity to enjoy a dessert.
Beyond his skills and hobbies, Mac was a storyteller at heart, sharing tales from his Navy days and his youth in Beach, ND. His stories were often accompanied by humor, leaving everyone around him with smiles on their faces. Mac's compassion knew no bounds; his kindness extended beyond his family to anyone in need. He was a true animal lover, and his affection for dogs—and eventually even cats—was evident to all who knew him.
A private ceremony will be held to honor Mac's life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Mac’s memory, to continue his legacy of generosity and love.
Mac's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. As we say goodbye, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who will be missed but never forgotten.
