Michael Leroy Newman, Sr

The world has lost a treasured soul with the passing of Michael Leroy Newman, Sr., who left us on August 9, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on July 23, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, Michael was the cherished son of Alton Leroy Newman and Alberta Estelle Busby Newman. Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Michael's kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Michael was a proud graduate of Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Class of 1957. His sense of duty and adventure led him to serve our country with honor, first in the Army and then reenlisting in the Navy, where he served for 13 years before retiring as an AG-1 E-6. His dedication to community service continued throughout his life as an active member and past commander of the Alief American Legion, as well as a past president and devoted member of the Alief Lions Club. In 1959, Michael married the love of his life, Evelyn Panzino, and together they built a beautiful family until her passing in 1998. In 2018, he found love again and married Margie Kinzel-Shehorn, with whom he shared his later years. Michael's family was the center of his world. He is survived by his children, Nancy N. Crivellari (Barry), Michael L. Newman, Jr. (Debora), Patrick R. Newman (Karen), and Monica N. Buchanan (Kevin), as well as stepchildren Skip Kinzel, Ash Kinzel, Brett Kinzel (Lisa), and Matthew Shehorn (Amber). He was a proud grandfather to 13 grandchildren, including Nicholas C., Amanda C. Mills, Lauren C. Laney, Robert Woodward, Garrett N., Trevor N., Madison N. Morales, Jordan N. Wilfong, Remington Newman, Evelyn Faith Newman, Evelyn Brooke B. Hurley, Reagan B. Taylor, and Laynee Buchanan. He also leaves behind 8 great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of laughter and love. Michael was an avid fisherman and hunter, hobbies that allowed him to share his love for the great outdoors with his family and friends. With a joke always ready to lighten the mood, he had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. Michael is predeceased by his parents, his brother Alton S. Newman, and his beloved wife Evelyn P. Newman. His memory will be carried forward by all who knew him, in stories shared and laughter remembered. A service celebrating Michael's remarkable life will be held on August 14, 2026, at Gillett Cemetery in Gillett, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Michael's memory to the American Legion or the Lions Club, organizations that were dear to his heart. As we bid farewell to Michael Leroy Newman, Sr., we remember a life well-lived, a man deeply loved, and a legacy that will endure through the countless lives he touched.
