Michael John Kawaglia

February 9, 1966 — February 3, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Michael John "Mikey" Kawaglia, who left us peacefully on February 2, 2026, just shy of his 60th birthday. Born on February 8, 1966, in the serene town of Kanakanak, Dillingham, Alaska, Mikey brought joy and light to those around him throughout his lifetime. Mikey was the cherished son of the late Kavalila Kawaglia and Grace Krause, whose love and guidance he carried with him always. He was a beloved brother to the late Gusty Kawaglia and his adopted sister, Mary M Larson Yako Backford. He leaves behind his devoted brother, Herbert "Herbie" Kawaglia, who will forever hold dear the countless memories they shared. A proud alumnus of Dillingham High School, Mikey was known for his gentle spirit and infectious enthusiasm. He found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in his collection of remote control cars and trucks, which he meticulously cared for and delighted in operating. Birthdays and Christmas were special times for Mikey; his eyes would light up with childlike wonder as he celebrated these occasions surrounded by loved ones. Mikey's journey was marked by a profound appreciation for family and community. He was a kind soul who cherished every moment with those he held dear. His warmth and humor left an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Providence Seward Mountain Haven, who provided compassionate care during Mikey's final years. Special thanks are also extended to his guardian since 2017, Sydney Edens of Edens Services, LLC, for her unwavering support and kindness. A service to honor Mikey's life will be held at St Seraphim of Sarov Orthodox Church, located at 1629 Woodriver Road. As we gather to remember Mikey, we are comforted by the words, "Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servant Michael John in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away." Mikey's departure leaves a void in our hearts, yet we find solace in the memories he gifted us and the love he shared. May his gentle soul find eternal peace, and may we continue to celebrate his life by embodying the kindness and joy he exemplified every day.
