In Loving Memory

Michael John Bernard
September 11, 1958 — September 21, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael John Bernard, who departed this life on September 21, 2026, at the age of 68.
Michael was born on September 11, 1958, in Rockford, Illinois, to John David and Lois Lillian Bernard. Throughout his life, he faced many challenges with resilience, determination, and an unmistakably independent spirit.
He was predeceased by his beloved parents, John and Lois Bernard; his cherished wife, Claudette Cormier; his dear sister, Michelle Zyvert; and his beloved granddaughter, Meghan.
Michael’s memory will be lovingly carried forward by his daughters, Robin Cormier and Lynn Tremblay; Robin’s partner, Corey; Lynn’s husband, Ian; his grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler, Kayla, Abbie, and Cole; his great-grandchildren, Olivia, Chloe, and Pyper; his siblings, Maureen and Paul Bernard; and his many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and neighbors.
Michael and Claudette shared more than 30 years together in Illinois, building a life filled with family, memories, and devotion to one another. When Claudette’s health declined, Michael cared for her with unwavering love and dedication.
A proud graduate of the University of Illinois, Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and went on to build a career at Hystar in Indiana, where he was known for his dedication and integrity.
Michael was also a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, serving overseas from 1976 to 1980. His years of service remained an important part of his life, and his family is grateful for the compassionate care he later received through the VA.
Outside of work, Michael found great satisfaction in the things he could build, grow, preserve, and care for. He especially loved creating lush vegetable gardens and took great pride in the home and life he made in Fairmount, Illinois.
He was deeply connected to his memories and to the people who came before him. Michael spoke fondly of his childhood and held a particularly special place in his heart for his grandmother, Gladys, and his grandfather, John.
Michael also enjoyed traveling and creating memories with his family. His travels took him throughout Canada and to Panama, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Bahamas, Germany, France, and Switzerland. More than the destinations themselves, these trips became treasured family memories and stories that will continue to be shared for years to come. Anyone who knew Michael well also knew that he enjoyed life on his own terms—including his garden, his routines, and, yes, his Marlboros.
In his final months, Michael was surrounded by family and cared for with the same love and devotion he had given so freely to those he loved throughout his life.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the VA for the care Michael received over the years and to his neighbors and friends in Fairmount, whose kindness and support meant so much during some of life’s most difficult moments.
In honor of Michael’s generous spirit, those wishing to make a memorial donation may consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, an organization he held in high regard.
Michael leaves behind far more than the story of the challenges he endured. He leaves a lifetime of memories, family stories, gardens grown, places traveled, and people who loved him.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
