Michael Joe Johnson January 1, 1956 – May 1, 2026 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Joe Johnson, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left this world on May 1, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on the first day of 1956 in the warm and welcoming town of Sparta, WI, Michael was a beacon of kindness and joy to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Michael was the cherished son of Kenneth and Dorothy (Middleton) Johnson, who preceded him in death, along with his brother Nelvin Johnson, brothers-in-law Gary Ewers and Robert Hammer, and his dear nephew Gregory Hammer. Despite these profound losses, Michael's spirit remained resilient and his heart open, always embracing life with a smile. A proud graduate of Sparta Senior High School in 1974, Michael went on to dedicate over 35 years of service at the Tomah VA Medical Center, where he worked in transportation. His commitment to his work was not only a testament to his character but also a reflection of his deep respect for the veterans he served. Michael retired with a legacy of loyalty and congeniality that left a lasting impression on both colleagues and veterans alike. Beyond his professional life, Michael was a man of many passions. An avid card player and golfer, he found immense joy in these pursuits, a joy he generously shared with his grandchildren, ensuring his love for the games would live on through them. Whether it was the sound of a well-hit golf ball or the laughter shared over a hand of cards, Michael found happiness in the simple pleasures and in the company of loved ones. Michael's warmth was infectious; his light-hearted jokes and ever-present smile made him a true people person. He had an uncanny ability to make everyone feel at ease, and he never missed a chance to say hello, making countless friends along the journey of his life. His genuine kindness and ability to connect with others were among his most cherished qualities. Michael leaves behind a family that adored him: his daughter Elizabeth (Bobby) Hess, sons Nicholas (Chelsea) Johnson and Joshua (Brittany) Johnson, and seven beloved grandchildren—Nolan, Natalie, Brady, Hazel, Jay, Bo, and Cal—who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings Cheryl Hammer, Steven (Kathleen) Johnson, and Barbara Ewers, along with several nieces and nephews. His family, always his greatest pride, will forever carry his memory in their hearts. A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on May 8, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Lanham-Schaneoefer. The family invites all who knew and loved Michael to join them in honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick's Parish, an organization dear to Michael's heart. The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff of St. Croix Hospice for their exceptional care during Michael's final days. Though Michael has left this earthly realm, his spirit lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the cherished memories of his family, and the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His was a life well-lived, and he will be deeply missed.
