Michael Jay Burkett

Michael Jay Burkett, a man of unwavering compassion and dedication, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on November 5, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, Mike was the cherished son of the late J. Frank Burkett and Tommie Lou Burkett. His journey through life was marked by a deep commitment to helping others and a boundless love for his family.
Mike was a proud graduate of Peary High School in 1968, where he laid the foundation for a lifetime of learning and service. His academic journey continued at Texas State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, followed by a Master’s degree in Counseling from The University of Akron. Armed with these qualifications, Mike dedicated his career to the field of counseling, touching countless lives through his work in crisis centers in Akron and Youngstown. His passion for helping those struggling with addiction, as well as his role as a Behavior Specialist for children with learning disabilities, showcased his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
In 2008, Mike married the love of his life, Karen Swan, on April 19. Together, they shared a beautiful journey, marked by their shared passion for crafting. During their retirement, Mike and Karen spent countless joyful hours creating crafts and sharing their creations at local craft shows. Their partnership was a testament to love, teamwork, and creativity.
Mike’s dedication extended beyond his professional life. He was an active member of Covenant Church, where he served as President of the Council. His leadership was instrumental in the successful merger of Faith Community and First Covenant Church in 2020, leaving a lasting legacy of unity and community spirit.
Together with Karen, Mike also found joy in volunteering at Camp Mission Meadows on Lake Chautauqua, where they made lasting memories and friendships.
Though his parents Frank and Tommie have predeceased him, Mike leaves behind a loving family who will continue to honor his legacy. His devoted wife, Karen, his beloved children Jay Burkett, Carrie Youens, Chris Burkett, Heather Brady, Kari Knight, and Breanne Reda, carry forward his values and love. He was also the proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Christian Burkett, Ben Youens, Asher Burkett, Vivian Burkett, Keyra Knight, Connor Knight, and Trey Brady, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at First Covenant Church, where friends and family will gather to remember a man who dedicated his life to service, love, and community. In Mike’s honor, the family requests that donations be made to First Covenant Church of Boardman, Ohio.
Michael Jay Burkett will be remembered for his kindness, his unwavering dedication to others, and the love he shared with his family. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
