Michael James Kugel, beloved husband, father, son, and friend, passed away tragically on June 29, 2026, at the age of 55, in a plane crash in Oklahoma. Born on December 25, 1970, in Madison, Wisconsin, Michael was a cherished gift to all who knew him, bringing warmth and kindness to every life he touched.
Michael was the treasured son of James Kugel and Karen Van Keuren Toohey. He was predeceased by his grandparents, George and Bernice Kugel, and Alice and Van Keuren, as well as his father-in-law, Maurice Johnson, and niece, Ashley Fischer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Heather Marie Johnson Kugel, with whom he shared 32 wonderful years of marriage and a loving partnership spanning 38 years. Michael and Heather were married on July 24, 1993, in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and together built a life filled with love and laughter.
Michael was the proud and devoted father of Willow Kugel, Hudson and Rachel Bonin Kugel, and Merritt Kugel. His children were his pride and joy, and he found immense happiness in their achievements and growth. He is also survived by his parents, James and Kris Kugel and Karen Van Keuren Toohey, and his brothers, Bill and JJ Bobbi Jo Kugel, who will greatly miss his guidance, support, and infectious humor.
A man of intellect and curiosity, Michael graduated from Lena High School in 1989 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1995. During his time at the university, he worked in the computer labs, where he was known for both his dedication and his ability to help others, always with a smile.
Michael's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and friendship. His genuine care for others and his ability to find joy in the everyday moments left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He loved spending time outdoors, exploring the beauty of nature, and sharing adventures with his family and friends.
While his life was tragically cut short, Michael's legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. His spirit of generosity and compassion will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of their choice in memory of Michael. His family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support they have received during this difficult time.
