It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael James Cullen, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, who left this world on February 13, 2026, after valiantly battling complications from ALS. Born on January 31, 1954, in Merced, California, Michael's vibrant spirit and zest for life touched all who had the privilege of knowing him. Michael was the cherished son of the late James B. Cullen and Doris B. Pregno, whose love and values he carried throughout his life. He is survived by his loving siblings, John B. Cullen (Gayle) and Maryellen C. Mazzei (David), and will be dearly missed by his nieces Kelley Cullen and Monique Mazzei Santos (Jason), nephew Kevin Cullen (Heidi), and great-nieces and nephews Molly and Connor Cullen. His family was his pride and joy, and he adored them deeply. Educated at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary and High School, Michael furthered his education at Columbia Junior College. His career began in his hometown of Merced at The Cask N Cleaver, where he discovered his passion for the restaurant industry. As a testament to his dedication and skill, he went on to own and operate Chiantis Ristorante at Bob Heart Square, Grinders, and a successful catering business. His culinary expertise and love for food made him a beloved figure in the community. In pursuit of new adventures, Michael relocated to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he spent over 30 years working at The Golf Club at Black Rock. As a Restaurant Manager at Shooters and later as a Property Manager and Housekeeping Manager, Michael brought warmth, humor, and professionalism to every role he undertook. Michael's passions extended beyond his career. He was an avid fisherman, skier, and BBQ enthusiast. His love for cooking was legendary among friends and family, earning him the title of "the go-to guy" for organizing and preparing meals during gatherings. His annual "Bud Runs" with high school friends were a testament to the enduring bonds he cherished and nurtured throughout his life. Those who knew Michael will fondly remember his kindness, generosity, and unwavering support. He was a man who loved deeply and was devoted to the people in his life. His special moments with friends and family are treasured memories that will forever be etched in their hearts. A celebration of Michael's life will be held on May 23, 2026, at 1:00 PM at The Mazzei Home, located at 4054 Vaughn Ave., Merced, CA 95341. In honor of his memory, the family kindly requests donations be made to ALS and local Hospice organizations, reflecting his enduring commitment to helping others. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Terrie's TLC, Terrie, Rosa, Hope, and Bristal Hospice for their compassionate care and support during Michael's journey. Michael James Cullen will be remembered as a man who lived life to the fullest, embraced love, laughter, and friendship, and left an indelible mark on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, and he will forever remain in our hearts.
