Michael J Curley

March 13, 1954 — April 24, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael J. Curley, a treasured soul who departed this world on April 24, 2026, at the age of 72, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 13, 1954, in the quaint town of Fairbank, Iowa, Michael was a shining beacon of warmth, humor, and kindness throughout his life. Michael was the beloved son of the late James and Patricia (Meier) Curley, who instilled in him a deep sense of family, community, and integrity. Though his parents preceded him in death, their legacy lived on in Michael’s every action and word. Michael embarked on his educational journey at Wapsie Valley High School, graduating in 1972. He further honed his skills at the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, Ohio, where he laid the foundation for a fulfilling career. Upon his high school graduation, Michael accepted a job offer from his father at the Fairbank Locker, a decision he never regretted. He proudly took over the family business, cherishing the chance to work alongside his father. After selling the locker, Michael continued his career in the food processing industry, contributing his expertise at both Iowa Ham in Independence, Iowa, and Kerry Foods in Fredericksburg, Iowa. His tireless work ethic and camaraderie with co-workers were testaments to his character and dedication. A man of faith and service, Michael was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Jaycees in his earlier years. His commitment to community safety and well-being was evident in his 23-year service with the Fairbank Fire Department, where he served as both a firefighter and an EMT, before becoming an honorary retiree. Michael’s life was enriched by his love of simple pleasures. He found joy in camping, canoeing, playing cards with friends, and participating in Waterball fights. He was an enthusiastic slow pitch softball player, often playing over 100 games in a season, with his children often by his side, either playing their own games or cheering him on. Despite facing the challenges of Alzheimer's in his later years, Michael's quick wit and kindness remained unwavering. He continued to make people feel welcome and cherished, never forgetting how to smile or enjoy life to its fullest. Michael is survived by his loving children: James (Melanie) Curley, Nick (Jo) Curley, Tiffany (Chris) Madsen, and Tony (Megan) Curley. He leaves behind nine adored grandchildren: Jenna, Kaylie, Anna, Tanner, Peyton, Hunter, Mason, Braxton, and Brynlee, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. Michael is also survived by his brothers Tim (Martha), Russ (Judy), and Keith (Tammy), whose bond of brotherhood was a source of strength and support. A service in honor of Michael J. Curley will be held on April 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Woods Funeral Home, located at 123 Ronda Road. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream of the service will be available at www.espn.com. As we celebrate the life of Michael J. Curley, we remember a man who lived with grace, love, and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. His spirit will forever remain a guiding light in the hearts of his family and friends.
