Michael Gerard Lee
November 23, 1944 — April 30, 2026
Michael Gerard Lee, a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on November 23, 1944, in the bustling heart of New York City, Mike's life was a testament to love, dedication, and an enduring passion for the people and moments that filled his days.
Mike was the beloved son of James and Elizabeth Lee, who instilled in him the values of hard work and kindness. He carried these values throughout his life, impacting everyone he met. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Virginia, who stood by his side since they married on August 22, 1970. Together, they built a life rich in love and adventure, blessed with two sons, Timothy (Alishia) of Syracuse, New York, and Daniel (Jennifer) of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, and further enriched by four cherished grandchildren, Kierstin, Brady, Ryan, and Quinn.
Born in New York City and growing up in Albany, NY, Mike attended Cardinal McCloskey High School, where he developed a lifelong love for basketball. As a standout athlete, he played various other sports including football and track. He furthered his education at Manhattan University, graduating in 1968, where he continued his passion for the sport by playing on the freshman basketball team. His enthusiasm for college basketball remained a constant throughout his life, with March Madness being his favorite time of year.
Mike's career was marked by his exceptional managerial skills and a genuine dedication to helping others. For 20 years, he managed Channel Home Center stores in New Jersey and Connecticut, later transitioning to Metropolitan Life Insurance, where he spent the rest of his career. His professional journey was defined by his integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
An avid sports fan, Mike's encyclopedic knowledge of sports trivia was legendary. He delighted in quizzing family and friends, particularly his brothers and sons, and always encouraged them to "up their game." His passion extended beyond sports; Mike was a devoted traveler, with Ireland holding a special place in his heart among the many destinations he and Virginia explored.
Mike's warm personality, quick wit, and remarkable sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him. His home was a sanctuary of laughter and love, open to friends and family who often found a second home under his welcoming roof. He took immense pride in his family, following the activities of his sons and grandchildren with great enthusiasm and joy.
In addition to his wife and children, Mike is survived by his siblings, James (Mary Jane) Lee of Naples, Florida, Nancy Lee of Albany, NY, and Brian (Marina) Lee of Naples, Florida, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored him.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and doctors of the ICU at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Mike during his final days.
A private ceremony will be held to honor Mike's life and legacy, as the family cherishes the memories of a man who brought so much light and laughter into their lives. Mike's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will be a beacon of love and warmth for generations to come.
