July 8, 1970 — May 31, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael “Fishman” Harris, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this life on May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Michael was surrounded by the love of his family and friends as he peacefully transitioned at the age of 55. Born on July 8, 1970, in the quaint town of Katy, Texas, Michael was the cherished son of Marry Ann and William Harris. From a young age, he exhibited a vivacious spirit and a deep love for the great outdoors, a passion that would earn him the affectionate nickname "Fishman." Michael's legacy is marked by warmth and generosity, qualities that were evident in his long career as a transit driver for the streetcar in downtown New Orleans. Beginning this journey at the age of 22, Michael found immense joy in his work, cherishing the opportunity to meet new people each day. His passengers were often greeted with a smile that could light up the darkest of days, and his colleagues became akin to family, drawn to his ability to make everyone feel welcomed and at home. A true testament to his love for life, Michael was an avid fisherman. The serenity of the water and the thrill of the catch were his sanctuary. He often joked that he could fish in his sleep, with dreams of casting lines and reeling in the big one. His mornings began with the eager preparation of his fishing gear, a ritual that brought him unparalleled joy and peace. Michael’s family was the cornerstone of his existence. He shared 28 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Philis Marie Harris, who stood by his side through life’s every twist and turn. Together, they created a loving home and raised their children, Khylan Armstrong, Karyonte Armstrong, and Jy’nika Clay, who will carry forward the values and love imparted by their father. Preceded in death by his brother, Courtney Harris Sr., his cherished daughter, Rayne Harris, and his great-grandparents, Etha Mae and Marsha Harris, Michael's spirit will live on through his surviving family and the precious memories they hold dear. He was the proud grandfather of four remarkable grandchildren, each of whom brought immeasurable joy to his life. Michael’s life was further enriched by the steadfast companionship of his close friend, Percy McCray, a friendship that began in childhood and endured through the decades. Percy was not just a friend but a brother, sharing countless fishing trips and heart-to-heart conversations that filled their lives with laughter and camaraderie. A celebration of Michael's life will be held on June 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at My Airy Baptist Church, located at 13566 US-Hwy 90, Boutte, LA 70039. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who touched the lives of so many. The Harris family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all who have supported them during this difficult time, offering their love and assistance in countless ways. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to honor Michael’s memory consider a donation to a local cancer support organization or simply spend a day by the water, fishing in his memory. Michael “Fishman” Harris will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his infectious smile, and his ability to bring people together with a simple, heartfelt invitation to share a home-cooked meal. Though he has cast his final line, his spirit will forever ripple through the lives of those who knew and loved him.
