March 6, 1944 — July 16, 2026
Michael Eugene Scholtus,
passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Born on March 6, 1944, in Ottumwa, Iowa, Michael lived a life deeply rooted in the land and the values of hard work and family.
Michael was the beloved son of Gerrit and Luella Scholtus, who predeceased him. He was raised in a family that valued connection, integrity, and the tradition of farming, which he embraced wholeheartedly. Alongside his father and brothers, Michael worked diligently on the family farm, learning the rhythms of the land and the meaning of dedication.
In his professional life, Michael took his love for agriculture to Iowa State University's Research and Demonstration Farms in Newell, Iowa. Over 38 years, until his retirement in 2004, he cultivated not only crops but also relationships and respect within the farming community. His colleagues remember him as a man of quiet wisdom, steady guidance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Michael's heart was always with his family. Though he did not have children of his own, he was a devoted brother to Patty Saunier of Hondo, Texas; Art (Lorraine) Scholtus of Ottumwa; Charles (Linda) Scholtus of Albia; Marge (Tom) DeMoss of Avery; and Rich (Linda) Scholtus of Russell; Special friend, Patricia Decker.
In addition to his work and family, Michael found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether it was a day spent in the fields, or a quiet evening with a good book, he embraced each moment with gratitude.
A private funeral ceremony will be held to honor Micheal’s life.
