Michael A. Smith, a beloved husband, father, son, and friend, left this world on May 15, 2026, at the age of 50. Born on November 20, 1975, in Houston, Texas, Michael lived a life full of dedication to his family, community, and faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will forever be cherished by those who knew him. Michael was the cherished son of John L. Smith and Lucille A. Smith, who nurtured his passion for life and learning. He was preceded in death by his devoted grandparents, Linda Newsome and Pop Newsome, as well as a host of aunts and uncles who welcomed him into the arms of eternity. In 1993, Michael graduated from Kashmere High School, going on to further his education at Texas Southern University. As a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., he embodied the fraternity's tenets of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. His academic journey culminated in a doctoral degree, marking him as a leader and scholar in the Houston community. On August 20, 2000, Michael married the love of his life, Mary T. Smith, with whom he shared 25 beautiful years. Together, they built a loving home filled with laughter and warmth, raising their son, John Smith Jr., who is now 17. Michael's family was the heart of his existence, and he took immense pride in every moment spent with them. For 27 years, Michael served as a Camera Operator for ABC13 Houston (KTRK-TV), capturing the stories that shaped the city he loved. His career was marked by dedication and a keen eye for the pivotal moments that defined Houston's vibrant tapestry. In 2023, Michael expanded his commitment to public service as an Executive Board Member under the administration of Sylvester Turner, working tirelessly to promote initiatives that enriched the lives of those in his community. Michael's life was one of service and faith. As a lifetime member of The Fountain of Praise, he served under the guidance of Dr. Remus E. Wright, contributing to numerous church ministries and committees. His dedication to community service and mentorship was unwavering, and he touched countless lives throughout the Greater Houston area. Though Michael's earthly journey has come to an end, his spirit lives on in the hearts of his surviving family: his devoted wife Mary, his treasured son John Jr., his loving parents, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles who will forever carry his memory. In celebrating Michael's life, we honor a man whose kindness, wisdom, and grace left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift, reminding us all to live with purpose, love with abandon, and serve with humility. Michael A. Smith will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
