Michael John Murphy

Michael Murphy, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Born on July 5, 1958, in Ohio, Michael was the cherished son of Dorothy and Steward Murphy, who predeceased him. Michael's life was a testament to dedication, service, and love. After graduating from Lake Catholic High School in 1976, he answered the call to serve and joined the United States Air Force. Over his distinguished 20-year military career, Michael rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. As a boom operator in the 434th Air Refueling Wing at Grissom AFB/ARB in Indiana, he served with honor during the Gulf War and was awarded the Air Medal for Combat Air Refueling. After retiring from the Air Force, Michael pursued his passion for engineering, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University in 1992. His expertise and dedication led him to a successful 32-year career with Caterpillar Inc., where he made significant contributions in Lafayette, Indiana, and Griffin, Georgia, before retiring in 2024. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael's vibrant spirit enriched the lives of all who knew him. He was a founding member and former Senior Warden of All Saints Anglican Church in Fayetteville, where he found joy and solace in his faith community. His love for the great outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included golfing, hiking, exploring historical sites, and working outside. Music was another passion, often shared with loved ones, creating cherished memories. Michael's heart was as expansive as his interests. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife Becky, with whom he shared 17 wonderful years. His children, Dorothy (Brundage), Christopher, and stepdaughter Sydney McQuern, were the pride of his life, and his granddaughters, Annalise and Elizabeth Brundage, held a special place in his heart as their adored "Papa." Known for his fun-loving nature and patience, Michael was a man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. His warmth and kindness will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who found comfort and joy in his presence. A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held on September 19, 2026, at All Saints Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to All Saints Anglican Church to honor Michael's memory and continue his legacy of faith and community service. Michael's journey touched many lives, and his legacy of love, service, and kindness will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know him.
