Merton Munson Jr.
October 3, 1942 — June 5, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Merton Munson Jr., a beloved father, grandfather, veteran, and friend. He departed this world peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the age of 83. Merton was born on October 3, 1942, in the warm embrace of Abilene, Texas, into the family of Colonel Merton Edward Munson and Marguerite Munson, who preceded him in death.
A man of remarkable dedication and service, Merton's life was a testament to courage, love, and the pursuit of adventure. His early years in East Lansing, Michigan, where he graduated high school in June 1960, set the stage for his disciplined and ambitious future. He pursued his dream of serving his country by graduating from the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point on June 9, 1965.
Merton's military career was marked by valor and loyalty. He served as a reconnaissance pilot in Vietnam from September 1967 to September 1968, earning two Army Commendation Medals and fourteen Air Medals for his bravery and skill. His dedication continued with service in the Maine Army National Guard and the Army Reserve, culminating in twenty years of distinguished military service.
In 1965, Merton married the love of his life, Geraldine (Gerry) Goria. Their union was a beacon of love and companionship until Gerry's passing in October 2000. Merton found love again with Georgia Haley, whom he married in 2004. Georgia remained a cherished partner until her passing in 2012.
After leaving active duty in 1974, Merton transitioned to a civilian career as an airline pilot, where he brought the same dedication and precision to the skies until retiring from Continental Airlines in 2002. His retirement offered him the opportunity to indulge in his passions—sailing his Catalina sailboat, flying his light airplane, and enjoying the camaraderie of friends while shooting skeet. These activities brought him immense joy and peace.
Merton was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association and a proud member of the Association of Graduates of the USMA, where he maintained lifelong friendships and bonds. His legacy of service, commitment, and passion for life endures in the hearts of all who knew him.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his son Gregory Munson, and cherished grandchild, who carry forward his spirit and values. Merton's life was a tapestry of love, courage, and adventure, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched.
A private ceremony will be held to honor his memory and celebrate his extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to veterans' charities in Merton’s honor, continuing his legacy of service and support for those who served.
Merton Munson Jr. lived a life marked by honor, love, and a boundless spirit for adventure. May he rest in peace, forever remembered and cherished.
