Merton (Bud) Shaw

Merton "Bud" Shaw, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully departed this world on September 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in the charming city of Portland, Maine, on June 5, 1940, Bud lived a life filled with adventure, love, and service. Bud was a man who never met a stranger, his warm spirit and infectious humor leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He was the cherished son of Merton L. Shaw Sr. and Virginia Power, and grew up with the loving guidance of his stepmom, Tina Shaw, and stepdad, Charlie Power. Bud was predeceased by his dear wife, Virginia (Ginny) H. Shaw, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage beginning September 8, 1963. Together they built a family, creating a legacy of love and kindness. A proud graduate of South Portland High School in 1959, Bud's life of service began with his work as a Maine State Trooper. His dedication led him to serve as a policeman in South Portland and Scarborough, ultimately reaching the pinnacle of his career with the U.S. Secret Service, where he retired after 20 years of exemplary service. Bud was not just a man of duty, but of joy and passion. He had an affinity for hot rods, especially his prized 55 Chevy, and a knack for carpentry. Whether he was playing water volleyball at the Platte City YMCA or "puttering" in his garage, Bud found happiness in the simplest of things. His visits to Home Depot to "sniff the lumber" were legendary among friends and family. A hardworking individual, Bud always had multiple side jobs and was perpetually ready to lend a helping hand. He often asked, "you are either no good or good for nothing, so which one is it?"—a testament to his wit and encouragement for others to find their purpose. Bud's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Suzi McNair and her husband Kelly; his devoted son, Jeff Shaw and his wife Kathy; and his six cherished grandchildren: Michael Shaw, Emily Shaw, Connor McNair and his wife Reba, Taylor McNair, Madi Shaw, and Rylan Shaw. Bud's family was his greatest joy, and he found endless delight in spending time with them. In accordance with Bud’s wishes, there will be a private ceremony to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Bud's memory, honoring his generous spirit and lifelong dedication to helping others. Though Bud's physical presence may be gone, the love and laughter he shared with those around him will live on in their hearts forever. His legacy of kindness and humor will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
