Merle Bourne Jr

Merle Bourne, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at the age of 83. Merle was born on March 21, 1943, in Decatur, Illinois, a place that would remain close to his heart throughout his life. He was the cherished son of Merle Bourne Sr. and Joyce Parnell, who predeceased him. Merle was also preceded in death by his wife Suzanne Bourne, his children Sherri Lynn Bourne and Michael Bourne, and his brothers Rex Bourne and Ronald Cline.
Merle's legacy lives on through his sons, Merle Bourne III, Troy Teel, and Todd Teel, and his grandson, Maison Bean. He is also survived by his brothers, Judd Bourne and Robert Cline, and his caregiver and friend, Heather Alexander. Merle's extended family includes many nieces, nephews, and cousins, who will remember him fondly. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren.
Education was an important part of Merle's early years. He graduated from MacArthur High School in 1962, where he made history as the first all-state athlete from the school. He continued his education at Eastern University, majoring in physical education, which laid the foundation for his lifelong passion for sports and teaching. Merle's professional journey began in Chicago, where he worked as an insurance agent with Combined Insurance. His career was marked by roles as a salesman, manager, and trainer. In 1973, Merle took a leap of faith and opened Illini Marketing Insurance, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. After retiring from the insurance industry, he pursued his love for horses by founding White Pines Ranch, specializing in Missouri Fox Trotters, a breed he held dear.
A man of many talents and interests, Merle was a proud member of the Missouri Fox Trotter Association. His love for sports extended beyond his own achievements; in 1967, he founded the Junior League Football in Decatur, marking one of his proudest contributions to his community. Merle was also an avid horseman who delighted in trail riding and teaching riding skills to young enthusiasts.
Merle's personal qualities were as remarkable as his achievements. Known for his fun-loving nature and positive attitude, he was a compassionate soul who always sought to help others. His love for children was evident in the way he engaged with them, leaving a lasting impact on many young lives.
In accordance with Merle's wishes, a celebration of life event will be held in his honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
