Merle Kunz
February 14, 1952 — April 23, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Merle Kunz, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world peacefully on April 23, 2026, at the age of 74. Merle was surrounded by the love of his family and friends at the time of his passing.
Born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1952, in the quaint town of Jamestown, ND, Merle brought warmth and joy into the world, a fitting beginning for a man who would be known for his big heart and generous spirit. He was the beloved son of Eugene and Erma Kunz, who preceded him in death and who now welcome him with open arms beyond.
Merle grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1970, a milestone that marked the beginning of a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love. It was in Jamestown that Merle first discovered his love for community service as a member of the Jamestown Fire Department. During his years in service, he bravely and selflessly contributed to the safety and well-being of his neighbors, embodying the spirit of camaraderie and courage.
Professionally, Merle found his niche in sales, a career that suited his affable nature and gift for connecting with people. His genuine interest in the lives of others and his infectious optimism made him a beloved colleague and a trusted confidant to many.
Outside of work, Merle was a man of many passions. He found joy in the thrill of NASCAR, the strategy of hockey, and the camaraderie of football, where he was an ardent supporter of the Denver Broncos. These interests were not just hobbies, but a means through which he connected with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Merle shared 33 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Debbie, who was his rock, his partner, and his greatest love. Together, they built a loving home and a family that was the pride of Merle’s life. He is survived by his children, Melissa Guthmiller of Jamestown, Kyle of Bismarck, Bryce (and his wife Tracy) of Denver, CO, Jason of Washington, Stacy of Minnesota, and Davian of Bismarck. Merle’s legacy of love and kindness lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Caitlyn and Zachary Guthmiller, Kynley and Addalyn Kunz, and Bradley and Tyler Kunz, who each carry a piece of his heart.
Merle’s life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and community. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering kindness, integrity, and an enduring love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A celebration of Merle’s life will be held to honor the joy and warmth he brought into the lives of those around him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a local fire department or community organization in Merle’s memory, continuing his legacy of service and compassion.
Merle Kunz will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. As we say goodbye to a remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
