Mercie Butler
August 14, 1942 — July 5, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Mercie Butler, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, on July 5, 2026. Mercie left this world peacefully at the age of 83, after a courageous battle with blood cancers, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on August 14, 1942, in the close-knit community of Hallsville, Texas, Mercie was the beloved daughter of Will and Louise Jackson. She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings: brothers Will, Clarence, Oscar, and Sam, and sisters Fannie May, Merlene, and Tracy. Though she has gone to join them, her legacy continues to shine brightly through the lives she touched.
Mercie shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Carl Butler, with whom she celebrated 35 years of marriage. Together, they built a family rooted in love and resilience. She is survived by her children, Elaine Graham, Sandra Graham-Curry, and Jackie Butler, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy extends further to her cherished grandchildren, Keenan, Kendrick, Kaysha, Jonathan, Jacoria, Jasmine, Trevor, and Brooklynn, and her great-grandchildren, Nehemiah, Nadia, Kiersten, Jaden, Teryn, and Justin. Mercie also lived to see her family grow to a fifth generation with her great-great-grandchild, Nemo.
Mercie's family was the center of her universe, and she was known for her protective nature and unwavering dedication to them. Her brothers, Billy and Eddie "Skeet," survive her, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends who enriched her life, including Mae "Opal" Mills, Margie, Ms. Jay, and Ms. Bobby.
Her career spanned 35 years at TI Instruments and an additional five years with Garland ISD before she embraced retirement. Mercie was known for her feisty, straightforward, and at times, bossy demeanor, traits that were complemented by her remarkably loving heart. Her warmth and humor were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mercie accepted Christ at an early age, a faith that guided her throughout her life. She found joy in simple pleasures, such as cooking for her family during the holidays, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and indulging in the excitement of playing at the casino.
Her family and friends will remember Mercie for her vibrant spirit, her unwavering loyalty, and her capacity to love fiercely. Her life was a testament to the power of family and the beauty of unwavering love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made in Mercie's memory to a charity of your choice supporting cancer research or family support services.
Mercie's presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. As we celebrate her life, we take comfort in knowing that she is watching over us from above, her love everlasting.
