Melvin Rudolph Lewis

September 1, 1935 — May 27, 2026

It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Melvin Rudolph Lewis, who departed this world suddenly on May 27, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on September 1, 1935, in the heart of Norfolk County, Virginia, Melvin was a beloved son of Ella Mae Lewis and Joseph Louis Dey, both of whom predeceased him, as did his cherished grandparents. Melvin's journey through life was marked by steadfast love, unyielding dedication, and a spirit that touched all who knew him. He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Hattie B Lewis, whom he married on June 23, 1962. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, a beacon of commitment and support that will forever inspire. Educated at Crestwood High School, where he graduated in 1956, Melvin continued his studies at Norfolk State College in 1957. His pursuit of knowledge was temporarily paused as he dutifully served his country in the Army from 1958 to 1960, a period that instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that would guide him throughout his life. After a brief tenure at the Ford Motor Company, Melvin faced the challenge of a layoff with resilience and determination, founding his own business. As a master craftsman, he dedicated his life to building and renovating homes and leaving an indelible mark on the landscapes he touched. His legendary brick work and carpentry were not just professions, but passions that he carried well into his eighties. Melvin was a man who wore happiness like a second skin. His laughter was infectious, his smile a constant presence, lighting up rooms and hearts alike. A repository of knowledge and wisdom, he was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer sage advice. His expertise and warmth will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. He is survived by his devoted children, Vincent Leander Lewis, Rhonda Lewis Lovett, Brian Craig Lewis, and Kenya Danielle Lewis, who carry forward his legacy of love and strength. His grandchildren, Vincent Zaire Lewis, Joshua Lewis Lovett, Rachel Abigail Lovett, and Kayla Tiara Thorogood, were the apples of his eye, each carrying a piece of his heart. His sisters, Willie Mae Marie Lewis and Jeanette Dey Andrews, Aunt Mary Lewis Spence along with daughters-in-law Beth Ann Fraley and Josette Lewis, stood as pillars of his cherished family. Melvin shared a special bond with his cousins, Helen Higgins, Anderson Foreman, and Norman Lee Foreman, and was an adored uncle, cousin, and friend to many. His extended family and friends celebrate a life filled with joy, laughter, and unyielding devotion. A service to honor Melvin's life will be held on June 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1765 S Military Highway, Chesapeake, VA 23320. The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone for their kindness during this time of mourning. Your outpouring of love and support is a testament to the life of our loved one. May God bless each and every one who stopped by, fellowshipped, called, brought food, and worshipped with us. Melvin Rudolph Lewis leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship that will forever be etched in the hearts of those he touched. Though he has left this earth, his spirit remains, guiding us with his wisdom and enveloping us in his eternal embrace.
