Melvin Edward Mays
September 7, 1957 — August 16, 2026
Melvin Edward Mays, a cherished soul, left this world on August 16, 2026. Born on September 7, 1957, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Melvin was a beacon of joy and strength for all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was the beloved son of Thelma Mays, who preceded him in death, along with a father whose name he never had the opportunity to know.
Melvin's journey through life was marked by a deep love for his family and a profound curiosity about the world. He was educated in Chicago schools, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with exploration and wonder. His passion for understanding different cultures and histories led him on extensive travels through Africa, where he embraced the identity of a citizen of the sovereign 'Republic of New Africa.'
A devoted brother, Melvin is survived by his siblings: Dorthy Walker, Jacqueline and Eddie Smith, Khaleed and Makeda London, Kenneth Mays, Ricky Jones, and Darrell Mays. His legacy of love and kindness continues through his children, Ashanti Jamillah El Brown and Maumin Omar Khabir El Crowder, whom he shared with Cylvia Crowder, the mother of his children. His spirit lives on in the laughter and smiles of his cherished grandchild, Tatum Brielle Brown.
Melvin's life was a testament to the power of family bonds and friendship. He was a pillar of strength and a source of unwavering support to a host of other family members and friends. Remembered for his infectious laughter and warm heart, Melvin touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
In honor of Melvin's generous spirit and commitment to helping others, the family kindly suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
