Melvin Douglas Travis

It is with deep sadness and profound love that we announce the passing of Melvin Douglas Travis, a cherished husband, brother, stepfather, and grandfather, who left us peacefully on September 29, 2026. Born on May 23, 1938, in the tranquil surroundings of Chatham Township, Ontario, Melvin was the beloved son of Velma Ileen Chandler Travis and Wilfred W. Travis. Melvin was a man of immense warmth and kindness, qualities that shone through in every aspect of his life. Educated at Dresden Public Schools, he carried the values of hard work and compassion into his career, where he dedicated himself to assisting handicapped children at a facility in London, Ontario. He also honored his family's legacy by working alongside his father in the family construction business in Dresden. In a testament to his generous spirit, Melvin was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years, offering support and friendship to those on their own journeys of recovery. His warm smile and caring nature left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. On September 8, 1976, Melvin married the love of his life, Vivian Harris, whom he had met at a social gathering. Their union was a testament to unwavering love and companionship, and they shared over 50 beautiful years together. In a poignant reflection of their deep connection, Vivian passed away just an hour before Melvin, her heart giving out but her spirit forever intertwined with his. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his stepson Scott Harris, and his brother Jerry Wilfred Travis. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted brothers John (Brenda) Travis and Glenn (Marcia) Travis, his sister Eileen Travis, and his stepchildren Cindy (Mark Spurr) Harris and Timothy (Lindsey) Harris. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren, Sophia and Adam, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. Outside of his professional and familial commitments, Melvin enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, tending to his garden and enjoying the companionship of his dogs over the years. His love for nature and animals was a reflection of his gentle soul. A service to honor Melvin's life will be held on October 5, 2026, at 3:30 PM at Woodlawn Cemetery in London, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in Melvin's memory. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Peoplecare Oak Crossing and the hospital for their compassionate care of Melvin during his final days. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
