Melvin Douglas Lanning

July 25, 1934 — May 19, 2026

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Melvin Douglas Lanning, who peacefully departed this life on May 19, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on July 25, 1934, in Salisbury, North Carolina, Melvin was the cherished son of the late George and Lillian Lanning. He was a beacon of love, strength, and dedication to his family and community. Melvin was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Donna, with whom he shared 72 incredible years of marriage. Their journey together began in 1954, in their hometown of Salisbury, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and three wonderful children: Keith Lanning (and wife Sheri), Melanie Harris, and Gwyn Gridley (and husband Scott). Melvin's legacy of love and kindness extends to his five treasured grandchildren and four adored great-grandchildren, who were the lights of his life. A proud veteran, Melvin served his country with honor and dedication as a member of the United States Navy for three years. His sense of duty and commitment extended beyond his military service into his professional life. In 1966, Melvin embarked on a meaningful career at Newport News Shipbuilding, where he worked diligently and retired as a respected welding foreman in 1993. Melvin was a man of deep faith and community spirit. For over 40 years, he was an active member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, where he found solace and strength in his faith. He was also a proud member of the Mason Monitor Masonic Lodge, earning his 60-year pin, a testament to his unwavering dedication and service. Those who knew Melvin will fondly remember his love for the great outdoors. An avid fisherman, he found joy in the tranquility of nature and cherished his time spent camping in his RV with the Peninsula Good Sams camping club. Ever adventurous, Melvin loved being on the road, driving cars for local dealerships, and embracing the freedom of the open highway. Melvin was predeceased by his loving parents, George and Lillian Lanning, and his brothers, Walter and Ernest Lanning. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his dear family and friends, who were blessed to know and love him. A service to honor and celebrate Melvin's remarkable life will be held on May 27, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Parklawn Wood Funeral Home, located at 2551 N Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23666. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, a place that held a special place in Melvin's heart. Melvin Douglas Lanning leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace.
