Melva Antionette Johnson, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love and kindness, peacefully departed this world on April 5, 2026, at the age of 84, embraced by the warmth of her home. Born on March 5, 1952, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, she was the beloved daughter of Melvin and Ruby Summerville. Melva gracefully walked the path of life, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and resilience.
Melva’s journey began in the bustling streets of Chicago, where she grew up and attended Calumet High School. Her thirst for knowledge and her compassionate heart led her to Loyola University, where she earned her degree in nursing. This foundation was the cornerstone of her career, during which she made an indelible impact as a dedicated executive assistant at Rush Hospital. Over her 25-year tenure, Melva was celebrated for her unwavering commitment to safety, research, and kindness, her work touching the lives of countless patients and colleagues.
Melva’s life was a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of passion and purpose. She had an enduring love for music, roller skating, reading, traveling, and gardening—each a testament to her zest for life. Her devotion extended beyond her family; as an active member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church for over 15 years, she enriched her community with her faith and service. Through her involvement with the Fierce Women of Faith charity, Melva’s spirit of generosity and her belief in empowering others shone brightly.
Those fortunate enough to know Melva will forever remember her for her bright smile, warm hugs, and infectious laugh. Her unwavering loyalty and deep love for her family were hallmarks of her character, providing a source of strength and comfort to those she held dear. Her sense of humor, generosity, and resilience touched all who crossed her path, leaving a legacy of love and faith that will endure in the hearts of many.
Melva’s life was a testament to the power of family. She is lovingly survived by her children Myron Thomas, Stephanie Black, Carla E Cabil, William Black, and Virgil Jennings, along with a cherished legacy of eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren who will carry her spirit forward.
A celebration of Melva’s life will be held on April 12, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Leak & Sons Funeral Service Home, located at 7838 S Cottage Grove Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Fierce Women of Faith charity, ensuring Melva’s legacy of empowerment and compassion continues to flourish.
